|
|
i was sick of my old machine doing random reboots with a format and reinstall not ficing the issue, so today I spent some cash.....
I got...
Intel Quad core Q9450
2 gig DDR2 ram with 1066 FSB,
Gigabyte X48-DQ6 Mobo,
Thermaltake toughpower 750w PSU
Razer Tarantula Keyborad
Corepad XXXL mouse/desk pad
and to keep it all cool and looknig pretty, A themaltake Xaser VI case.
Its a bit of overkill, but its going to be round for the next few years so it needs to be a stable but componet upgradable platform, The case is GIANT! its a full tower as you can see from the attached pic, it presents very well, and compared to my old POS pc, its a beast,
I have not benchmarked it yet, I blew my 20 gig cap already and have not had a chance to aquire a decent bench marking tool.
I am running vista, that was a requirement as well. I have plans for a further 2 gig matched in the not to distant future. alsoo picked up a printer and some other peripherals to. definatly a good step going to a decent quad core though. i was looking at the Q6600's but FSB speeds and overall performance put them towords the upper end of dual cores that could be had cheaper, this one does the job well.
It had to be a quiet machine as it is in my room, i did not care about lights and stuff on the machine as I can't see em when i sleep and make no difference, but the case is pretty bling especially for an off the shelf item.
I will run my current GFX card for a while longer as it handles most if not all applications and games I use right now, and the PS3 is my games machine anyway. |

heat is pretty much non existant, yeah 4 pipes to the CPUwith aditional cooling on the reverse side of the mobo to, I am going to benchmark it soon, I already know the GFX card is the weak link, but it suits what I am doing right now so I am not able to justify a new card, especially witht the cost outlay of the new rig.
Even making the machine push hard on stuff like Crysis Demo, the processor was only about 40% on all 4 cores, the 2 gig of ram is stupidly fast too, performs better than the 3 gig on the old board,
old ram will possibly be up for sale soon, its DDR2 3 gig, I think about 533 speed.. but just speculation right now. |

Intel E8400 Dual Core
Gigabyte EP35-DS3R
2GB DDR2 800mhz
Geforce 9800GTX 512MB
Cost me about $900 :S
The video card is massive. I'll take a few pics when I get home. |

Quite cheap for their performance too, $200 at MSY for a Gigabyte branded one. |

running kingaton hyperX 2 gig matched at 1066.
Gfx card is raedon 1650 XT pro heatsink, its getting on a touch now but still does the job well, when it comes to an upgrade, i will go crossfire, or sli whatever you want to call it. the 9600Gt are better but not really significantly better to jstify replacing something that works well currently.
have not oc'd the system as yet, currently stock speeds, but, when you upgrade from a p4 3ghz to this, its faster, but then so is my gran, when she is in her wheelchair too.
The mobo runs seriously cool, like high 30-low 40 degree under load, so i am happy, and that is with the stock cooling, I will look at the thermaltake heatsink/fans before i start to push it though, so similar to yours frank,
I got the same case as you too frank, but mine is the brushed aluminium not red and black.
this mobo is nuts, all up I have about 14 usb slots, does external drive hookups, ie no need for a external case, so great for multi boot stuff, as previously stated, heat pipes galore, I will try a lower res pic, only just having set the machine up, all my software like photshop is not currently installed, so downsizing pics is a b**ch..
but will see what I come up with and post results.
BTW what benchmark prog are people using, I'll bench mine and post some scores.
I'll show you mine if you show me yours! |

do change to door opening direction, when the door is open you will see a black piece top and bottom of the door on the end of the hinge area, have a good look at the case, you will see on the front top abd bottom on the opposite side to where the hinge currently sits that there are locating holes, I found i only needed to take one of the hinges out for the whole door to come off, to get the door off, there are small tabs top and bottom, you need to apply a reasonable amount of pressure to the tab while sliding it up (for rht e bottom) and down (for the top). just repeat the process to install the hinges on the other side, and magic door opens the correct way. It gave me the s**t until I realised it was reversable.
And the mouse pad being so HUGE.. it actually feels really good having the keyboard and mouse on teh one big pad, its a proper high quality gaming pad, idea is that you can move the keyboard all the way to the side and have a BIG area to use the mouse, really good for fps's where you use big mouse strokes, nothing worse than strafing across to have to pick up the mouse cause you have reached the edge of the pad. abd ultimatly cause I could. |

Nice specs, still not a fan of thermaltake cases personally.
My mate had one years ago that we dubbed the "nuke proof" case as it was ridiculously heavy and strong. I guess that's the good thing about them |

dc_todd. I use 3DMark to bench my computer, but that was a while ago and my computer is now 4 years old. So I will be upgrading mine some time later lol...it runs I'm happy.
phong =P~
EDIT:
| alfy wrote: | what the mouse pad?

There is never enough mouse pad space. I always run out of mouse pad space when I am playing games...and when playing CS or DoD online and running out of pad sucks balls. |

| I had the exect same issue with pad space, hence the purchase of the LARGEST pad I could find. Actually really comfortable. |
