The EF has been inspected, parked up as a result of a snapped rocker. Done 700 000km, was a taxi, had a lot spent on it in the last 12months mechanically and motor seems clean inside.
A quick question for those in the know on EL engines, is the motor an interference or non interference valve to piston setup? In other words if timing chain snaps do valves get plastered? |

Inteference.
Does that explain how the rocker snapped |

OK, that means the chain went then the rocker. That means I need to think about a replacement engine (probably easiest) for the EF. Will give all that some thought, will try and lift the head. The owner says he has tried to lift the head but was unable to get the bolts out.
Is there issues with the bolts freezing into the block when they have a lot of age on them or was the dude not trying hard enough?
Anyhow if I put it all back together I can get the whole thing setup and then later on when I want to develop a tune we can sort the donk out. |

They are torque to yield, so they tend to be tight to undo.
Definately use a single hex impact socket trying to get them out.
Sometimes you may need a pipe on the end of your breaker bar to get the extra leverage to crack them. |

Steady
I believe you're on the money with that one, I specifically asked the guy was a breaker bar used and he said no, he tried to remove them with a 1/2" impact wrench which would do SFA on something that tight.
OK, will go with the plan that I can get the head off at a later date, we have a strong association with a local engine machine shop so a few new valves etc should be no problem.
Thanks bud, you have been a timely help! Cheers |

It seems that tomorrow we could be the owner of a EF sedan. Expect progress to occur |

We now own an EF, poor old jigger with chaser rims and column auto, have to fix ta motor a little and we should be all good to go. In the meantime I will do a quick reassemble and then jig up the blower bracket etc.
Should be cooking with gas pretty soon .......... actually thats not as silly as it sounds, she has the whole LPG setup fitted and still in test, actually just had full retest and all recertified. This is also reason why the motor is nice and clean inside.
Do all EF's have dark grey tappet cover? Also it has a Tickford logo on an alloy plate on inner left hand guard, cannot determine what it relates to, anyone got an idea what its about, somehow doubt that taxi's got Tickford engines ........... |

Tickford logo will be because its factory fitted with 'tickford gas'. It will be an alternative fuels plate.
Also, I beleive that all the EFs had a grey cover, unless they were tickford head-ed.. then they had dark red.
Still, good news!! Keen to see some results!
Cheers
David. |

Yes it did say something about Tickford Gas, I believe you know exactly what you are talking about! The previous owner said it was factory fit gas. Maybe I will even come up with a charged LPG option out of this |

Remember the Ford showcar "Predator" from about 10 years ago Tim? It was an EL IIRC and had a supercharger (CAPA Powerdyne perhaps?) and GRA LPG system good for about 230kW at the flywheel.
I often wondered why it had this particular combo, especially as no factory hi-po LPG engine eventuated.
But from what I've seen here and at AFF, I gather that an aftermarket ECU is pretty much an automatic choice when boosting (particularly turboing) an E-series. I wonder if the Ford techies found they had created something in the ECU that made it a right bastard to tune for boost with petrol and LPG made it all a whole lot simpler? Buggered if I know why Ford chose not to use a MAF when pretty well all the contemporary US EEC-V cars used MAF's. Many of them were offered with an M90-equipped 3.8 V6, so Ford had a lot of in-house expertise in tuning MAF-equipped boosted cars.
It will be interesting to see how this tunes. The AU's MAP Defender may not be much help as the EF/L use a digital MAP that signals by frequency instead of voltage. Very different to the B-series, AU and Commodores. This will present a whole new set of challenges, but as you say your threads' "viewed" counts show where the market is. I'm sure it will be worthwhile. |

It probably also has the Gas ECU which has dual maps.

OK
Sly as usual mate you are correct, I was informed about it being frequency a couple of days ago while we were sorting the AU.
Time for a bit more lateral thinking. I should have a bracket pretty quick but will take a little while to bring this old sheila back to life with the valve situation etc with the head. |

Predator was LPG because that allowed the engine to be turbo'd without and engine changes - no decompression required.
Ford Techs have always been able to remap the ECU's at will - that information/tech is just not available outside of Ford.
Predator ran GRA gear as you pointed out - the factory ECU would not have been doing much more than simple ignition as the GRA Throttle bodies at that time werent able to do Idle control and relied on the CTI for metering at low loads - CTI simply wasnt fast enough for Turbo'ing so the Carb would have been tuned very well.
Nice car though. had me thinking for a while.

Thanks for those links, I am pretty sure I saw this car at the Brisbane Motorshow, in fact I am 100% sure. Until now I would never have remembered this beast.
The power output is interesting too, our AU ute is within a whisker of this power figure now and more to go yet, they must have went ultra conservative on it. |

Yes they would have been conservative, it was a factory job after all. What interests me in the list of mods is the small number of mechanical changes deemed necessary to make a reliable package:
- Large-capacity remote oil cooler
- V8 radiator
- Rebuilt strengthened transmission
- Dana 'glass graphite' driveshaft
A testament to the robustness of the Falcon as a platform for high-performance mods. |

A start has been made on bracket design
But first I need a definitive answer to the following question
Does EVERY EF - EL AC compressor look like this on the front?? Do they share exactly the same bolt patterns (approx 8 screws) for the front cover on the compressor or better still are the compressors for both models identical?? Accurate answers to this question are critical to the approach I will take
Let me know ASAP .......... |

| the timing case is excatly the same, and although i am not 100% sure, i have both an el and an ef and the compressors look identical. |
