Hi guys, prolly a stupid question, there are heaps of onsellers of ATI and nVidia cards out there.

I currently have a Gigabyte 3870 GFX card, I am looking at a crossfire setup, I know I need to keep the card the same, but do I need to keep the onseller the same as well? Ie 2 gigabyte cards? or can I go a gigabyte and a HIS card as long as the 3870 chipset remains the same?

I know its probably a dumb question, but I thought one worth asking before spending $$ on a second GFX card.

Ultimatly I will probably end up purchasing a dual pack, and selling my exsisting card (about 1 week old!)

But would like to know will a Readon and Gigabyte card work together?

If your gonna offer a comment and a snide remark, don't bother, I just want a straight answer.

Crossfire you can run any brand together
You must run same Chipset - But this does not limit you to just a 3870.

You can run a 3870 with a 3850, or even a 3870x2 with a 3870/50.

edit:- here is a link to a 3870x2 and 3850
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=185933
plenty of info on that forum.

I was also under the impression that same mainboard series could be run this way, the clock speeds would be adjusted to suit the slower of the 2 boards in crossfire.

Just to be sure though, thought I would double check..

Cheers

ok, my next question is this..

I am currently runnibg a thermaltake tough power PSU 750w with cable management, SHOULD this PSU have enough balls to power the 2 cards in crossfire? other items runnibg off the PSU are Q9450 CPU 2 HDD 1 dvd writer, 8 usb's ( 4 still free ) 4 case fans and CPU cooler, not heaps I would imagine.. I think this PSU would well be up to the task of powering all this + the addition of 2 cards in crossfire..

Yes?

If it does it will be borderline.
Also take it from someone whos actually used crossfire. Its s**t, its not all its cracked up to be.
Its not like thinking wow ill get double the peformance because i have to. Its like 30% MAX in a perfect enviroment and i would no suggest it. Id sell the card and spend the money you were going to spend on buying one awsome card.

my 2c

OK now running 2 3870's in crossfire.. Scottlah, I dunno what you did wrong but crossfire is gutloads better. while I agree performance is not doubled, it is close to 60%, then with a slight tweek on overclocks you can get damn close to 100% I ran it through 3dmark pro, I will have to post some figures later when I am at home, but I was very impressed. Maybe you had an early gen card that could not push hard or take advantage of crossfire to well?

Also, I did spend the money buying 2 awesome cards. these things push harder than 8800GTS's each card is 512mb with ddr3 ram, better FSB speeds and lower latency.

i have looked at Nvidia stuff in SLi and do not rate it compared to these.

Your PSU is plenty for your system even with a good over clock on it

I run a 3870 and a 3850, noticeable performance increase in games that support it

my system is older than yours - 965-dq6 (has 2 PCI-E slots but one is 16x the other is 4x) so i am getting less bandwith to the second card.

To be honest a single 3870 was enough for my gaming needs but a 3850 cost me 120 delivered i couldn't pass it up.

I'll post these up tonight, just getting SP1 for vista right now.

Plus its my wedding anniversary today as well, so don't scream if they are not u, but i will do my best.

Off the top of my head, with only one card the GFX side of things was hitting about 3100 with #dMark Vantage..

Will re run and post a screen dump soon. If I am allowed

ok, benchmark has been done, as mentioned, with a single card this setup benched at about 3100 for GFX, with 2 cards running in crossfire absolute stock clock settings, it benched at 5800, so a pretty good gain, however its the one below i am proud of, these results were achived with only a mild overclock of the GPU and STOCK CPU, good I love a good quad core.
for the most part I actually do not run crossfire, in vista, i use a multi screen setup, 3x17" monitors.

but for gaming, crossfire... it kicks a**!!

one of the main things I have achived with the crossfire setup is getting more than 100% gain from it. best result I achived with simialer OC settings was 3300 or there abouts, I am sure with a bit more tweeking, I can push this setup to achive double that score.

Needless to say, i am very impressed with the setup.

if you have not already check out the Matrix Triple Head to go.

allows you to game over 3 monitors.

yeah this is crossfireX this is also the first card from ATi that was purpose built for vista, also runs directX 10.1

I could achive even higher speeds, but I can't really be bothered with overclocking for now, I more wanted to achive quick and reliable compared to outright speed, I have seen some results from people running similar setups and getting MASSIVE figures, I am happy to have have plenty of lazy power on tap and a pc that is capable of running the current stuff for the next few years without constant updates, I don't mind buying small stuff here and there but now I have the base setup, everything else should flow smoothly.
