Yeah, I'm thinking of changing the intake, but as I said, that'll pretty much be decided by the dude who I have looking to buy it when I get home.

I'm still wanting to know if there are any benefits of changing to 1.7 rrs and if it's worthwhile to do whilst I've got the engine open. Clearance won't be an issue.

Also, someone's mentioned to me I should think of getting the heads ported. As the motor is, would it be worth it? Also, I have no idea what kind of money I'd be looking at spending to get the porting done. Can anyone give me a ballpark figure?

Thanks

Scaffy i think you'd be better going for something like this.

Balanced and blueprinted bottom end while still keeping it std.
SVO alloy heads, untouched but ported with new valves.
Spare set of valves.
A/market pistons.
Spare set of a/market pistons.
Two timing chain sets.
H/E sump, and H/V oil pump.
200kw cam with 1.7 rollers (Which really chew out guides)(make sure rockers arent adjustable, you'd be silly to do so)
And of course std tune and maintain std mechanicals but use all of the above.
To complete the build successfully the motor should be assembled once by a so called competent engine builder, started and F**k UP, then stripped again. This is here your 2nd set of valves, pistons and timing chain will come in handy.

Should be good for mid 14 sec quarters and wheelspin anywhere over 2500rpm, should also give some real impressive fuel economy, which is something you should REALLY be concerned about when modifying a V8. Will also give some insane talk figures, Talk?? I think thats how you spell it.

Overall this build can set you back a very hefty amount of $$$, will take up a hell of alot of your time, resulting in lack of quality time with missus,
which in turn makes yourself even more frustrated causing you to post rediculous posts in others threads and not in your own to try and get some self confidence back.

If you have any further questions regarding the build feel free to throw t2te50 a PM, he should be more than happy to help you out!!!

I should warn you though. That setting yourself such goals and carrying out this build may turn you in to a WANKER, literally.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

GOLD!

f**k man, I've never sat in front of a computer and p****d myself laughing. I was getting worried straight away when you recommended blueprinting the bottom end and getting the SVO heads. Then the penny dropped. icon_biggrin.gif

Nice work Jeff.. Hee hee hee. icon_razz.gif

Scaffy I'd wait to see what Dim has to say about the 'state' of the engine. I cannot remember if you're running the Street Heat or Track Heat intake. If its the Street one, don't bother changing back to the Explorer it really isn't going to be any improvement.

I have the Street Heat intake. I don't think it'll be getting in to Dim's any time soon as he's pretty busy. It looks like it'll be a little while from now before I get it all sorted, but I'm happy to wait to get it done properly. It'll give me a chance to get a few bits and pieces together!

Scaffy, taken from another thread about the fuel pressure guage. Now you've got it fitted, what pressure is it at? With vacuum connected and dis-connected.
Also are you running an adjustable fuel reg?

I've got myself an adjustable fuel pressure reg but haven't fitted it as I don't want to f**k s**t up. Will leave it for someone who actualy knows what they are doing.

Fuel pressure is about 37-38 (psi?)

One question I have, which may sound silly but I need to ask, should it hold pressure all the time whilst it's not runing, or is it normal for the pressure in the line to drop off to 0 overnight?

As for with vacuum line connected and disconected, I don't even know where that is! icon_confused.gif

Pressure should bleed back overnight, but should be at the preset when the car is primed, ie turn the key but dont start it

Yeah, when primed it's at about 40, then drops off a couple when running.

I just thought I'd post a couple of pics of the engine bay in the build thread as well. It looks a hell of a lot better than it did in page 5! icon_biggrin.gif

Paint the eggcrate shaped coolant tank black and that will suit it nicely, not like you can really see through it anyway.

Good idea mate. I've been looking at getting one of the polished ones in there though. I'll probably give that a crack now. Cheers

Thanks. A while back I hit it with the air compressor, then with a rag and windex I pretty much went over everything. After that, if it was black it got a taste of Armour All. Now it's just a matter of wiping it down whenever I delve under there.

Yeah mate, bring it around and I'll clean it while you're having a few beers watching. Oh, I'll supply the beers too! icon_razz.gif

For a while now, my car's seemed to be running pretty rich. It's been a bigger pig at low speeds and coming to a stop than it normally is which I've felt may be caused by the richness. When I back it into the garage the strong smell of fuel was pretty bad. Also, after getting it serviced last week, my mechanic said I really need to pull some fuel out of it as he believes I'd gain a bit more out of it.

On Friday I was toying with the idea of hooking up the laptop and pulling a bit of fuel out of it myself. Just as anyone reading this would be thinking this is a bad idea, after about 10 minutes I thought the same thing. In the end I thought that the tune can't have changed since it was tuned by Terry and I'm sure the twEECer's not going to change the tune itself, so it came down to the EEC. I disconnected the battery for a while (head units should have inbuilt memory to save settings!) and after reconnecting it, I went for a drive and noticed a big difference. It had much better manners when driving normally, sounded a lot crisper and felt smoother under load and didn't stink of fuel in the garage when I got back. I guess the EEC was doing some funky s**t to try and counter some of the settings in the twEECer?

Next thing, when I got it serviced I was told that the diff plug has been stripped. When my mechanic went to undo it, it just spun. He's left it as is for now and said I should try and get hold of another rear hat or whatever it's called.

Would anyone happen to have one laying around for an EL by any chance? I'll have to get this fixed pretty quickly I'm thinking...

I've got the diff plug sorted. A rubber one will be going in tomorrow. I ended up finding a couple of diff hats but they wanted $80+ for them! Considering the whole diff goes for about $220, it's a bit rich.

With a nice, cold day tomorow and what looks to be a pretty cool evening, I think I'll head down for what may be my last run for the season. See if I can get lower than the 13.9s I've managed so far. Will anyone else be making their way down?
