| ive done this on my xt. i took out the tissue box, and cut the speaker wires to the icc. installed the new cd player where tissue box was, and connected all the snipped icc wires. no need to run new wires to the speakers. run new power cables and earth for new stereo to keep your icc screen power. i also used a piece of mdf to make a false front plate to go around the front of the cd player, and covered it in black vinyl. my new deck had an ipod cable, so i put the ipod cable around the back into the glove box. looks neat and tidy, and can connect my ipod to the cd player and leave it out of the way in the glove box while driving.

^ The factory unit is s**t
Adding a after market head unit is pretty easy, no more difficult than in any other car, just that you can't remove the ICC.

Mine:
I did run new speaker wires for everything (because I replaced all the speakers too).
Blends in nicely with the factory colour scheme. I used the tissue box holder (almost) as is. It required a little cutting and drilling of screw holes to get the 1DIN head unit to fit - otherwise it's like it was made to hold a head unit.
Got the output running to the ICC screen too.

I'm running a 3-way front end, had no choice but to run extra wires.
FYI getting 16ga speaker cable into the front doors is a real PITA.

Why would you want to stuff around and do something like that???
Or at least install the unit straight, or in the GT-P tuck the wiring out of sight...very bodgy looking installs....
Nothing wrong with the factory unit, and with the Alpine upgrades available, they can sound even better.

What wires? The coily one in the second pic goes to my phone charger/holder (from the cig lighter). And I still use the pocket underneath to store stuff.
The stock unit is crap (honestly the stock system in my old EL was significantly better), unless you're happy with a mediocre CD player and FM radio. I've now got DVD, DTV, CD, MP3, FM/AM, Aux input (front mounted camera for when I go to the track), recordable output, a proper equaliser, time alignment, three way front stage, 5.1 output if I want it, normally the rear speakers are disabled, and the centre channel runs my phone hands free, and I'm sound quality winning awards with it.

Vehicle hub (your alpine upgrade) still leaves you with stock cd and radio. Which means if you have a XT or similar like me, single cds only.
My unit on the other hand does everything vehicle hub does except it has 5 or 7 band equaliser (can't remember which), MP3 and WMA, crossover, 3 x 3v preouts, media expander. and the list goes on i hope i've made my point because i'm sick of simple people not thinking about the bigger picture before they post. There is a lot to be said about keeping it looking original, but there's more to say about adding aftermarket units (unless you have a top of the line standard stereo,

I can see your point with the basic system, I do not agree with Ford making it impossible to just replace the head unit, but it did not look straight in the photo....I will take your word for it being straight as I have no reason to doubt you

| Ah, turn up brightness on screen. No problems there, they were taken just after install. They've been fixed up since, as said I use the space down there, fingers getting stuck in wiring would be annoying.
