Noticed today that my diff has developed a leak from the front bearing area. It does not appear to be the seal but leaks from what appears to be the spline and out through the nut at the front. Is there a seal on the spline for the yoke? If not how do I go about fixing it.

| im not really sure what you mean by a nut on the spline. is this what you mean the mounting plate bolts are leaking, if so the plate has a small gap that acts as a breather when the seal leaks, i think its to prevent the fluid from leaking onto the disc and pads. |

Sorry, perhaps not explained that well, its actually the Pinion that is leaking not the axles.

MitchG911 had the same problem, there is a bearing seal as I understood it, and you can buy them from repco, from memory wasn't that expensive, and from what he told me, it was easy to do.
I'll get him to come on here and explain...

Repco were no help other than to supply the seal.
Ford service were very helpful, they suggest I use blue silicon sealant on the spline and Nut.
I followed there sealant advise and additionally replaced the pinion seal as I had the yoke off anyway.
Replaced the oil with new stuff and tested it, no more leak now.

damn diffs..glad its not 4 wheel drive with 2 diffs i guess! |

The advise I got to reseal the spline is, you need to remove the tailshaft, remove the retaining nut and apply the sealant to the inside surface of the nut and reinstall it. You don't need to remove the yoke as the sealant is forced down the spline. I actually replaced the seal at the same time.

thanks for that.
I havnt even got under the car properly and looked yet but its good to have an idea before i get going. Noticed the leak when i replaced the fuel filter.
I did the seal on the end of the gearbox myself months back now n was a lil disapointed to find another leak at the other end of the car haha. o well..ive replaced that many damn seals on this car...i guess thats what 260,000kms does to you  rubber doesnt last forever. |
