Hey everyone. I was thinking of making a website for the fun of it and because I can. Not sure what the content will be but I wouldn't mind having a Domain with my nickname in it.

I was after the site address of www.phongus.com. I typed it into the browser and it happens to be taken though current owner hasn't paid their bill so the domain name is kind of pending.

The exact message that comes up is as followed with some other advertisement jazz.

Quote:
This domain is parked, pending renewal, or has expired.
Please contact the domain provider with questions.

How exactly do I know who the domain provider is and contact them?

Anyone else know what the going rate is for having a ".com"?

Thanks in advance.

Domain Name: PHONGUS.COM
Registrar: ONLINENIC, INC.
Whois Server: whois.35.com
Referral URL: http://www.OnlineNIC.com
Name Server: NS2.ONLINENIC.NET
Name Server: NS3.ONLINENIC.NET
Status: clientUpdateProhibited
Updated Date: 29-apr-2008
Creation Date: 27-apr-2004
Expiration Date: 27-apr-2009

Looks like your going to be waiting a while icon_smile.gif
try getting .net etc.
Also what normally happens is once a domain expires and no one renews it there are these stupid bots that automatically buys it in a hope people will pay big money for the domain.

Hope that helps

Thanks for that icon_biggrin.gif. Though how did you manage to find out all those details icon_confused.gif.

I can wait till then. Might contact the domain provider and see if I can get it off them after the expiry date.

I'd prefer the .com...if all fails a .net should do.

my domain cost 30 bucks for 2 years via jumba if i remember rightly... its not too pricy really... thats a .com name... just a note, you cant get .com.au unless you have an ABN...

google WHOIS and dns tools, should help you find more info on what you seek icon_smile.gif

Cool thanks for that zxhoon. Yeah was told about the .com.au and requiring an ABN...my mum has an ABN so it may come in handy icon_wink.gif

I figured it may be costly if the .com is already taken, but once the contract expires, isn't it free game and should cost the same?

Another thing...does the domain provider (in this case http://www.OnlineNIC.com ) basically own the site address I am after? I am new to all this domain stuff so not sure how this all works on the ownage side of things icon_confused.gif.

All you need is
The domain
And some cheap webhosting until you start needing bigger bandwidth
Use an ftp to connect and away you go.
It can seem hard but its all fairly simple.

Spot on and many of us can assist Phongus with domain name registration, hosting and domain delegation.

Phongus there is free and cheap hosting out there, USA hosting is generally the cheapest, Australian hosting is way over priced for what you get, probably still caused by Telstra's stranglehold and less competition.

If you ask nice someone here icon_wink.gif might be able to help you with hosting, depending on what you want this person might be able to give it to you for free and help you set it up. PM me icon_lol.gif

I use jumba for domain and hosting, just a small site but i get 500mb space and 5gig a month in traffic (thats up and down so it counts when i upload to it) but it only cost $29.95 for a year of that, true free hosting exists and isnt too hard to set up either, i just decided to stick with jumba for domain and hosting to have it all in one place... a .com domain is $14.95 a year or $29,90 for 2 years... for something to toy about with its not too pricey i dont think... there are probably cheaper options in australia still.. but yeah thats just what im running so you have some kind of reference..

Hell, you can get that free thing as well. Something like phongus.2ya.com, and than host it off freewebs.com.

I am currently with freewebs and have some stuff on there which I sometimes use so others can access it.

But they have a sucky plan sort of thing. Well I am using the free account so that is understandable.
