I'd get the heads serviced before fitting them. While they are being serviced get them to fit new valve springs that would suit that cam.
Part of servicing the heads would be new valve stem seals. You can buy a top end gasket kit which has all the bits you need. My engine shop guy sorted all that out for me.
Also get a rollmaster timing kit. They aren't very expensive. |

The std springs on GT40P heads are pretty ordinary to say the least. I would think they are too light for a cam like the E303.
Im not even sure there would be enough spring height on the exhaust side. They are pretty short on the std heads when you take into account the lower groove for valve locks and the rotator on the exhaust side.
There should be a single spring setup that will work OK with the E303 without having to machine the spring pockets. Talk to the guy doing your heads. Ford should have a recommendation for spring pressures for the E303 in the Ford Racing catalogue... |

Are the valve springs on the GT40s any different to those fitted on E7s? I used the stockies on my setup and keep the revs down. The torque from this cam in the mid range is so much better than the stocker, you dont need to rev it to get it going. Nevertheless, the revs do come very easy when doing the heads, manifold and cam.
castlegreyskull, you might have to do something with your diff ratio though, mine is a pig coming out of small roundabouts, I have to work the clutch a bit hence the need for a XR spec diff ratio. Your ECU wont have any problems with the idle though, mine idles nice and bumpity-bump. My LPG on the other hand....... |

Im liking my choice more and more with th response im getting from people banarcus!!!
Yeah i have thought about the diff, i will see how it goes to begin with, but yeah i will be looking at a diff ratio after everything is installed. Funds have just been a bit depleted lately |

get new head bolts, They are torque to yeild type.
buy a vrs kit, this kit will cover all that you require to do the job including
valve stem seals which you should do if heads have been sitting around.
you'll def need valve springs, retainers locks and correct lenght push rods.
Not sure if you'd have to notch your pistons for valve/piston clearance with the E303 cam lift or not. A must check to do.
You could clean up the heads, depends on how far u wanna go |

Did you buy these off Yella Terra, are these the stocky GT40 heads they didn't CNC port etc? Still much better heads than E7 if they are. |

Alright, after a ong wait, because of funds, this will start to happen this weekend. i shall start pulling the old girl down.
My question is, will i need anything, as in bearings, gaskets, etc...
Pretty muc i will be replacing heads, cam, inlet manifold.
I have:
- Cobra Inlet manifold
- Gt40p heads
- 2030 cam
- manifold gaskets
- larger t/b and MAF |

Full top end gaskets, so Heads, intake, water pump gasket( be careful as the sump needs to come down to change the cam) timing cover gasket, tb gasket, exhaust gasket.
That should cover most of the items needed

Also just wanting to know whether the genie headers i have will fit in the body. i know they will fit the heads, its justa a matter off fitting it all together.

Its pretty easy, start at the top and work your way down. The Max Ellories book isnt too bad on strip and assemble. Cams i get done by others, as i am not too sure on how to dial them in.
Basically remove battery power, the remove electrical connections for TB etc, then remove upper mnanifold ( i remove the upper and TB as obne peice), the lower, and sepearate fuel lines/water lines etc. Then remove exhaust manifolds. Then remove front end dress and radiator. You may be able to get the cam in without removing the aircon condensor/radiator, but not sure.
Then remove heads. The motor look reallys small when they are that bare.
Then if you are doing the cam, remove water pump and timing cover. Remove timing chain and replace. remove cam.
Install new cam and degree it. set up new timing chain.
Assembly from there is the reversal of removal
Hope that helps

It's easy to do matey. Follow the bouncing ball sort of stuff. The only 'issue' that could come up is pushrod length. Your lifters will take up minor differences though so don't stress too much. Don't forget your stem seals too. A bit of oil on each when you push them on helps a lot. If you get stuck, I can help on Sunday arvo if things get tight. I've got all the tools too.
PS take care of your air con condensor lines. Jack up your car so that you can drop it enough without the need for a re-gas. |

cheers fella, very helpful.
Just a reminder for myself to get these things
Head gaskets
Rocker gaskets
intake gaskets
water pump gasket
Timing chain
timing cover gasket
tb gasket
exhaust gaskets
Stem seals
Just bought some 1.72 rockers too, so i will have to do them before i put the heads on.
If you think of anythin else, let me know. As i will have to go and see my contact at ford and order the gaskets. |

It would be wise to buy some cheap easy outs just in case your water pump bolts are seized. I had 2 seized bolts that wasted about a half a day buggering about. In the end I borrowed some easy outs and they eventually came out.
Also buy some permatex black goo to use on the water pump and timing cover. I also used permatex on my cork, yes cork rocker cover gaskets and I have yet to find an oil leak.
I'm not sure but I believe that those rockers would suit the 2031 Crane. You may have to check your lift if you choose to use those rockers with your 2030 Crane. Last thing you want is a heap of bent valves.... |

Do the rockers after the heads are on, that way you can adjust them to fit( if they are adjustable)

i normally get some tape and stick a bit to the threads so you can label the lower intake bolts as theres several different lengths .....just saves time d**k round gettin the right ones where theyre spose to be
and when you refit the lower manifold and youve got the intake gaskets stuck on the heads i normally get a couple of bits of thread stock or old bolts and cut the heads off fit one in each side front and rear and use them as locating dowels so you can lower the manifold down in line without moving your gaskets ( especially if youve port matched)
hope this helps |
