yeah its pretty much the same as 2003 but with a few extra goodies, i've just never set a server up from the very start, always took over from someone. Just a basic help in how to set up a domain would be extremely helpful, thankyou

Stupid I know, but actually have the thing plugged into a hub or switch so the Network connection is "active" even if you hasve assigned a static IP.

Windows takes issue with card not being plugged in, considering them "inactive" and won't set up a domain without it.

depends on whether WS2008 is acting as a DHCP/DNS or if the router is doing this.

If WS2008 IS doing the DHCP and DNSing, make sure that it is serving the correct Default Gateway, (which should be your router)

i use server 2003 / sbs everyday at work - haven't played with 2008 a whole lot yet, the uptake of it...is well, dubious

What are you wanting to achieve with this computer you have setup with Server 2008 - if you are a little more specific about what you are wanting to achieve, and how you want it to work, then we can provide more assistance.

sorry mate, ill explain a bit better. BTW the internet is working now, in 2008 you have to go to add features and wireless LAN is down the bottom, it is disconnected out of the box.

I want to have a file server with permissions, a automatic back up once a week etc.

Problem im having now is that i have given everyone a tb each for there own drive, i have given everyone full access of their folders and yet they cant delete anything and everything they open is opened in read only???

Cheers

There are File and Directory permissions, and there are Share permissions.
Chares by default have a "Read-only" for Everybody permission on them. Whichever is the most restrictive wins, in this case, the Share permissions

1. Do the people have access to their own folder directly, or through a network share?

2. What users and groups have you created thus far?

3. Are the people who are supposed to access these folders logging into a domain, or a local machine?

4. How much data are you wanting to back up, how important is the data, and how much do you want to spend.

e.g. at the bottom of the ladder we have something like, a scheduled task to run a batch file that copies the contents of a network share to an external hard drive.... cost of an external hard drive + 15 mins work

at the top, we have a tape autoloader - with something like BackupExec, utilising an array of full and differential backups onto seperate tapes, with tape contents encrypted and stored in both onsite and offsite secure storage..........at least $20,000 and a good couple of hours to setup

a. Everyone has there own network folder based on the server ( a TB each)

b. Groups - Directors, Consultants, Admin, Finance, IT, Personal Assistants, Operation Managers
Each of these have between one and 6 people in them.

c. Everyone is logging onto the domain progressivetraining.com

d. Back up isnt overly majorly important. Either at the bottom or a couple of rungs up would be sufficient.

thanks for your help mate your doing a great job.
