PostPosted: Tue Jun 03, 2008 8:43 pm    Post subject: The LED Display/USB interface Version...... :0 Reply with quote

Guys,

Announcing the LED Display version ......

DCR - Diagnostic Code Reader

I had, sporadically, been working on a LED display version of the Code unit for sometime....however, it had spent most of the time on the backburner.
Anyway, quiet time at work off and on over the past few months and I had 6 or so projects on that backburner so I have attacked some of them.
Had three automotive ones - Speedo corrector, Thermofan controller (EL fans into EA-EB-ED) and the LED Diag Code Reader.

Finished all of them icon_smile.gif
The LED version has been completed .... as a prototype at this stage.
i.e. ..... It Works !!!

Details:-
- 3 digit LED display
- Three LEDs on the left of the display show Power On (green), Fuel Pump control status (yellow) and the code pulses (red).
- Reads the slow codes (chose not to do the fast codes... fast codes to not send the Memory Codes, plus more complex with more buttons needed).
- Reads 2 and 3 digit codes and has been tested on XF, ED, EF, EL and XH so far (eng, trans, ABS across these).
- Automatically detects 2 or 3 digit codes.
- Automatically detects the different models
- Did not go to LCD - much more complex wrt displaying additional info of Code details - decided to look at this (maybe) later.
- Implemented a USB port interface to PC.
- There is also a 4 pin plug for connection (via an adapter cable) to XF, EA, EB.

On Connection "dcr" for Diagnostic Code Reader is displayed.
When Diag Mode switch is set to On the display is "On"
First valid pulse changes the display to "---"
The Codes are displayed on the LED one at a time.
These is a short beep each time a new code is displayed.
Separator is displayed as "10-"
"End" is displayed after last code.

The USB connection works as a COM port on the PC so any terminal program can be used (e.g. Hyperterminal). Am running the USB at 9600 which is default in XP.

Next steps:-
Still doing a bit more testing (need to confirm EA/EB - but if it works on XF and ED and EL then there should be no issue).
Need to get front label artwork and get a batch of labels manufactured.
Order in all the bits
Make jigs to machine the cases.

The sexy curvy case I am using will be black in the production version.
I did not add a DB9 (COMport) connector due to lack of space.

Anyway... will keep yous informed.

That's a fine looking piece of kit for a prototype.

If I still had an E series I'd buy one now worries (If still got one of your 'old' ones).

OBD2 is so much easier to work with these days.

Good work.

I'm very interested in something like this for my ED.

So basically you plug it into your cars diagnostic port, pull all the dianostic codes out of it, then plug it into your computer to get the resulting output?

Hello, the operation is as follows:-

1. plug the PC/laptop into the unit.
The USB port, in the unit, is powered from the PC/laptop port.
Get Hyperterm working.
2. plug the DCR unit to the diagnostic connector.
3. On powerup the unit will display "dcr".
On powerup the banner (e.g.) "Diagnostic Code Reader v1.0" is output on the USB port and displays on the PC/laptop.
4. initiate test e.g. the KOEO test....
Flick the switch on the DCR unit to ON.
"On" is displayed on the LED.
"Diagnostic Switch On" is sent on the USB port.
Once the first valid pulse is detected the LED displays "---" and "Read Codes" is sent on the USB.
Codes are displayed on the LED and sent to the USB port simaltaneously (unit will beep at each new code).

One would need to write the codes down in conjunction with each notification beep if no PC is connected.

Once no more codes are detected "End of Codes" is sent to the USB.
4 secs later "End" is displayed on the LED.

5. At this point the unit is still in read mode if KOEO tests are initiated, or, the diag switch can be set to OFF.... if the Diag Switch is set to Off then "Diagnostics Mode - OFF" is sent to the USB and "dcr" displays on the LED.

I set this up on the basis that the unit would be used stand-alone more frequently that with a PC connected.

I actually did consider creating a "stack" to store the codes but did not develop this.
Thoughts ??

fstfrd69....
Have not produced the new version as yet.
Had to focus on some other stuff and that has caused a delay.
Have ordered most of the bits and these should arrive in the next weeks.
I'll post a message when ready.

wrt the program.

I am using FTDI devices and the drivers should come up automatically, or are downloadable from www.ftdichip.com - I'll provide details with the user guide.

To display the output data any terminal program would serve.
The unit outputs the info in ascii via USB on a virtual com (serial) port.

Hyperterminal is standard with XP.
Looks like microsoft discontinued providing Hyperterminal with Vista (and the owner of that software has also discontinued their free download service), but, if you google "free Hypertermal" there are still a whole bunch of mirror sites still going.
Or get the necessary files (hypertrm.exe, hypertrm.dll, htrn_jis.dll, hticons.dll) off an XP machine and they will work with Vista.

There are a whole lot of free terminal programs available (e.g. PuTTYtel is a good one) - or just google "terminal emulator" and take your pick.

Hope that helps.
BTW - I have avoided Vista as a lot of my software would not work with Vista when it came out... am sticking with trusty old XP for the foreseeable future.

RedRoo, yes it will. Will work from XF to EL. There is a connector on the base of the unit into which a XF-EB adapter cable can be plugged.

I did make a XF-EB adapter for the current ("analogue") unit, however, the adapter was based on the male recepticle version of the EB2-EL diagnostic plug. Was never able to find many connectors so never made many.

I have almost run out of pcbs for the original unit so have taken the opportunity to redesigned the pcb so that the next batch of the original unit will have a connector into which an XF-EB adapter cable can be inserted. Will be the same adapter cable as I developed for the new upcoming digital version.
