|
|
My EL Fairmont windsor V8 has extractors, 2.5 inch exhaust system, K&N Panel filter, AU220 snorkel, 3.45 diff gears, LSD, 18 inch wheels and ive bumped the timing up a few degrees... only 87,000km and its an auto.. In fantastic condition..
My Windsor V8 is probably typical of its characteristics, very punchy off the line, quick to 60km/h. The car feels fantastic from 1000-4000rpm but doesnt really build much more grunt after 4000rpm.. You will be flat on the throttle and it doesnt seem to feel like its working that hard... It revs out reasonable quickly and changes up about 5500rpm but doesnt feel like it makes great power up top in the rev range..flat on the throttle... 0-100km/h in about mid 7s so typical performance from this type of car...
Is that just how they are? whats to blame... |

| Yep they are quite asthmatic in stock form. The E7 heads and HO intake on the 165kw engines are restrictive and they suck air as though through a straw. Unfortunate, however due to the smorgasbord of aftermarket parts for the Windsor, you can throw some money at them and they come alive very very easily. |

Yep in brief thats it.
Heads are s**t, HO inlet manifold is s**t, std T/B is s**t, std MAF is s**t, std exhaust manifolds are s**t. Std cam is a nice torquey cam but runs out of grunt up high. The yanks have got good results from the std cam mated with 1.7 rockers. Would be interesting to see how the std cam would go with some decent heads and intake and 1.7 rockers. Are you willing to try??
Are you looking to spend any money on getting it to move abit better or were you just wondering why it was so slow? |

Yes and the power drop off after 4000rpm is an example of the lack of outright flow.
Otherwise the 5.0 in stock form has excellent torque.
In fact the stock HO upper is a good piece...the lower lets it down.
Port the HO upper for a 65mm t-body and a ported HO lower(or buy a Holley systemax 1 lower if you could still get one?)with AFR 165 or other small port aftermarket heads and a stock cam with 1.7's would be a good way to wake it up WITHOUT losing all the bottom end. |

| Yeah i have heard about the upper HO being alright, but by the time you spend the money porting out, you may aswell just go and buy a explorer/cobra manifold or even a aftermarket one. |

True, but that assumes you will be paying someone to do it. It's something you can do yourself and there's plenty of info about how to do it. I'd probably buy a Cobra because I have next to no time anymore. |

when i did the heads and intake on mine, even though the power went up the economy stayed the same. so in effect the motor is more efficient.
i get about 420ish give or take off 65L give or take and thats with auto and 3.9diff and cam. i'm never in traffic though.
if you want your old ported ho manifold back its sitting under my bench but postage will be a bit more difficult than the springs. be too big for aust. post i reckon. |

I reckon my fuel economy has gotten better with everything I have in at the moment. When driving around normally, making gear changes at around 2500, I'm seeing around 11l/100km or better. My current tank I've seen 310km and it's just hit the half way mark. On the dyno it says I'm running rich too, so when I get the Motec in and it's tuned correctly, I'd hope to see better economy yet! |
