Hi Nathan,
Just purchased a pair of XR6 side skirts that are black & I need to prepare them to be painted winter white.

Could you please advise on surface preparation before painting in primer?
Is it going to be a pain going from black to white?
Appreciate any help you can give. icon_smile.gif

I would think you would have to strip it or sand it back so the primer will stick, after a grey primer it shouldn't be too hard to get it to white, I may be wrong so please anyone feel free to correct me:)

a light rub with some 120 wet paper should be sufficient. all you need to do is slightly rough up the surface so the new primer and paint have something to stick to. just rub it until it is dull and you should be right.

as forbsy said. all you need to do is give the black a scuff with 320 wet and dry (use wet, anyting a*** and the scratches will show thru in the top coat) to remove any gloss and prime using 2pack primer especially if you rub thru any topcoat. allow to dry then rub back with 600-800 wet and you are ready to paint. 1 light coat of colour then 2-3 wet coats. then rub with 1500-2000 and polish. you could always just give them a good scuff with 600 and paint straight over the black just like the cheap paint shops around. all depends how much you want to spend and how long you want the paint to last.

Have decided if i dont have to remove all black then I won't as its heaps of work.
Will sand with 240 & 320 before primer & 600-800 before first light top coat. Then 1200-1500 on finish then polish! icon_biggrin.gif

dont you then need the clear topcoat as i was told not to sand the topcoat of color on the spoiler i was doing ( my cars red) i was told 600 to ready for primer then sand with 1500 wet between colored coats and dont sand the last color topcoat .. put on approx 4-5 coats clear then sand that back till its all smooth with wet 1500 then wet 2000 then polish or is it different if its a white color .
