Check to see if the memory is properly seated in the motherboard

Could be icon_confused.gif Just re-check all of your connections from the power supply to the motherboard, HD, disc drives etc, but not likely. Possible HD failed. Have a multimeter?

Is it making any noises during start up? make sure everything is in properly.

If all fails try and use another PSU if you have one lying around. If that fails the test, mobo is hoboed.

i had this problem after i cracked the s**t with my pc and punched the side of the case (the stupid thing kept freezing on me) anyway i must of shorted something out by the contact that was made between the motherboard and the sidepanel.

i would push the power button and it would turn on but the light lights would stay solid but nothing would happen

Could also be that the power switch is busted, try shorting the two pins for the power switch on the mobo with a screwdriver or something and see if that kicks it into life. I've known of the switches dying and when I was working in a very busy and popular PC store, a lot of the cheaper cases the power switch was DOA.

where the power switch connects to the mobo, all that switch does is briefly make a connection between the two pins, so disconnect the power switch and using a small screwdriver bridge those two pins and see if it starts up or not. If it does start, the power switch is dead, if not, it's something else, I'd be betting psu next, bu tthe switch is easy to check.

if the tower automatically switches on then the comp already is turned on. You might try to clear the CMOS. You'll have to look this up for you motherboard as the pins are different depending on brand but are either labelled jp1 or clr_cms

There should be a LED or some other indication of the power supply providing the motherboard power when you connect up a power supply, you don't need to turn a PC on for it to light up. If you press the button and the fans spin up but nothing happens, check to make sure you've got the CPU fan connector plugged in, make sure RAM is seated properly, make sure video card is seated properly.

If still nothing, then disconnet everything except your CPU, RAM, video card and motherboard (obviously leave the cabling for these things plugged in), and replace them one by one until you find what is causing the problem.

While you're digging around you should be able to see if anything is causing it to short out..

Then i'd say something is causing it to short circuit. If you want to spend some time trying to fix it, take out the add-in cards on the motherboard, unplug your drives, then unscrew your motherboard and pull it all out. Take careful note of where the small cables which run from the front of the case (power & reset switch & hdd led & speaker) to the motherboard (usually bottom right) go, and which way they are plugged in. - you'll have to plug them back in and they're usually very fiddly. If you have your motherboard manual with you, it should tell you which way they all go.

Put the motherboard on something which doesn't carry static and isn't conductive, then put the video card back in, and connect the power supply. You will be able to see everything much better with the board out of the case.. good time to give it a clean too. I usually use a toothbrush.

Plug the power in and see what happens. You will be able to start the computer by shorting out the 2 power pins which go to the front of the case. Use the screwdriver.. You can turn it off again by holding the screwdriver on those same pins for 4-5 seconds. If it starts as it should, then you just need to be careful putting it back into the case to make sure it doesn't short out on whatever was making it short in the first place.

If the problem still exists, well at least you've crossed a few things off the list. While it's out of the tower is the perfect time to test other things like CPU and motherboard if you can find spare test replacements from friends / family etc. A power supply is cheap and they're the most common failure when it comes to pc's. It doesn't hurt to buy one to have as a test unit / spare.

ok many computers have an option in bios to automatically turn the computer on when power cale is reconnected this is not a problem i think you'll find this is normal.

I think your best bet is to remove the ram and use another stick or if there's two try booting it one stick at a time as one of the ram sticks may be stuffed or the ram port may be stuffed. That fixed mine when it had the same problem.
