It only happens every now and then....
When im in say Park... i put it in reverse and there's a loud bang (like smacking into gear) and its not a quiet bang either... fairly loud.

sometimes also happens when i go from reverse into drive..

anybody else heard of something like this?

do you put up your handbreak before you put it into park, because if not your park gear will be holding all of the pressure instead of the handbreak. try using your handbreak and test it out.

the ba does this - the handbrake is up the schiser and the transmission holds the car. when you pull it out of park it sticks in park and when you do yank it out it makes a loud clunk. solution - dont park on slopes because i am convinced there is no fixing that hand brake....

its odd hey... i thought thats what it would be... but sometimes it does it on flat surfaces (from drive to reverse say) and no, the car isn't moving when i do that! It must just be the diff locking or something... worth worrying over?

dif backlash. Most well travelled cars will suffer it to varying degrees.

I'm with Punnisher_42 because my ba used to do this even on even roads, told my mechanic about the problem and told me to use my handbreak first then put it into park. fixed the problem and havnt had a problem since.

yeah it'll be diff backlash or just to be sure check your uni joints. as it goes into gear, it takes up the slack..

There's no mention of the model . . . it could be an XA. If so there's not much worth in thinking about BA's, etc.

Im curios to know how the handbrake would help this situation out as all it would do is prevent the axles from moving causeing the backlash to really hit something hard when it does take up.
Also check out any rubber bushes/moutning on diff and gearbox crossmember if it is an irs model specially if an AU irs
