hey guys,

me and my dads project car is getting stripped in the coming months and we are looking to buy some engine parts soon.

looking at spending about 15-20,000 on the motor over a period of time and looking to get close to 350rwkw.

we are stripping EVERYTHING from the car so what im wondering is...

would a 351 fit in the bay? and if so is it a better starting point than a 302 with a 347 stroker?

we will be most likely carbing it due to simplicity, and getting rid of the ECU icon_smile.gif

all opinions would be greatly appreciated

351 would fit no problem mate. you may need to make your own engine mounts.

a 347 stroker would give you plenty of power but its all been done before.
a 383 or 393 stroker would be rad with a c4 behind it.
i no you can get a brand new crate 347 for around the 14g mark.

why?

$15-20 grand on a motor and it won't even be able to be registered, plus you will be losing driveability....it only costs like a grand for a chip to be tuned and it will run better than a carbie

I didn't think it was illegal to register a car if you got rid of EFI...

the car is an AU XR8, i know its not what most people would spend a lot of money on but we already have the car and i think its will be a good way for me to learn about engines.

i want something that is really different.

skidder, what you say about getting a chip tuned, would that be able to be done if i was to put a stoked 351 in it?

Thanks guys

it's not illegal, its just that its un-roadworthy

vechile must comply with emmisions, adr's etc etc revelent to that year

this is why people people who do ground up resto's with insane engine's choose older vechiles. less restrictions to pass

If you have 15-20 grand, i'd be looking at a windsor, Dart Block, maybe 408 stroker or similar.

Keep it EFI, It will be easier tuning and will have manners.

Maybe 347 and a blower?

15-20 grand is a fairly decent budget for a motor, but you will have to look out for a gearbox and possibly a nine inch rear end too.

You will have problems getting a 351W under an AU XR8 bonnet... In fact I doubt it will fit at all. You can get the 351 in and on the mounts, pipes may need to be custom. Your problem with be getting the car licensed, as you cannot fit an earlier spec engine (351W were discontinued by the time of the AU) to a later model car without full emmissions & ADR testing.

Your budget will be closer to the $20,000 end by the time you are done, depending on what you have to start with. No question a stroker 351 will make the power 'easier' than any 302-347.

PM me if you'd like a quote. icon_smile.gif

My 427 is 16k in parts, then a further 10k to assemble it. It is a dart based 351W block. I know you can get a 427 similar to mine from Coast High Performance for about 18k. Then you have shipping and customs duty( about 20%) and installation.
Check their website http://www.coasthigh.com/Assemblies/assembly_index.htm

Cheers
Brett
