After driving on the freeway and coming to a stop at the lights the oil pressure in my EF drops to zero with a beep sound from the cluster . This happens all the time. I have changed the oil and the same problem still exists. when i rev the motor the beep goes away and the needle struggles to move and only reache 1/4 way max. When i first start the car it sits on 1/2. is there a prob with motor, thanks

check to see if the "oil pressure sender switch" isnt stuffed!... (located underneath the intake manifold screwed into the block).. its common for this part to fail and give false readings to your dash...

If that doesn't work ^^^^^^^^ id say your bearings on the crankshaft are fkt. If its reading half when cold and droping that far down when warm, there that badly worn that when the oil thins out it cant fill the gap in the bearing shells so hence you loose oil pressure. You can try going to a thicker oil say a 20w 60, but i don't like your chances of it helping to much but hay some new oil is cheaper than a new motor, or it will at least prolong is inevatable death!

what oil are you using?

i had the exact same problem (only once the car had been driven for a while, when cold it was fine).

I was using 15w-30 oil, i put in 15w-60 and now she is perfect all the time.

Whilst going 15w-60 is a bit much, try 15w-50 and see how you go.

do this before you bugger around with the other alternatives.

My engine did that when warm with good quality 10w40 in it. I changed to Shell 15w50, and all is good. If the bearings or oil pump are going, it will take more than "just off idle" to raise the oil pressure. Get some new oil and a new filter, and you'll be right. icon_biggrin.gif

I'd be putting a quality mechanical pressure gauge on it first, that way you know IF you really do have a problem.

then decide if you want to fix it or bandaid it.
