|
|
Hey guys,
I have bought a manual conversion out of an ED, but it has a 3 bolt flywheel. I only realised today, but i have already purchased a 6 bolt clutch.
I just want to know what options i have to sort this problem out.
Do the two different clutches have the same overall diameter? (ie: are the bolts in the same position on the flywheel?)
Can i use 3 bolts to hold the clutch in (not ideal i realise)
I should be able to get an engineering shop to drill and tap holes in for me, but i dont know any of the measurements and the new clutch hasnt arrived yet.
This is all a bit of a f**k. when i get back to townsville (in cairns atm) i'll have to double check and make sure the box is what it is supposed to be as well. anyone got any hints on testing the gearbox is what is it supposed to be? I'm thinking test 1st gear. EA box = 3.5:1 EB2> = 3.25:1. Is that correct?
Any help on this one is appreciated
Thanks,
Nic

i up graded my clutch from a 3bolt to a six. You will have to get a six bolt flywheel. I looked into drilling and tapping the holes out to fit the six bolt but it only just fits on the 3 bolt flywheel (the ring gear is thicker in diameter from 3 bolt to six bolt) also you wont have any dowles. Also you may be able to bolt it up on just 3 bolts (the holes on my clutch DIDN'T line up) but what is the point on running a bigger clutch then holding it down with only 3 bolts???? i gave my 3 bolt heaps of greif and she took it all day, i only upgraded as my car is now turbo. And remember the larger recipracating mass of the six bolt will slow your shifts down!!!! Oh and don't worry about it being a ea box, mine is and its still taking everything i give it (with a turbo!) and there are plenty of guys out there that will tell you the ea box is stronger and has taken more s**t than any later model box. Have a look for the forums on boosted e-series, 8 out 10 voted the ea box will take more crap. Let the debate begin

flash:
thats not what i wanted to hear.
so the ring gear is different. does that mean the starter motors are different from ea to eb2> (not that it matters to my conversion, just curious)
i'm really not worried about the extra weight of the different assembly either, its a stocko 6 cylinder!! it makes d**k all difference
the only thing i am worried about is that i have a freshly machined (i noticed it as i handed it to the machinist) 3 bolt flywheel and a brand new 6 bolt clutch sitting here, and i am trying to go on damage control here and save some bloody dollars!

No the starter motors are the same. The 3 bolt flywheel is smaller in diameter so needs a thicker ring gear to reach the starter. The six bolt is larger in diameter so has a thinner ring gear to meat the starter. Make sence?
Id just go to the wreckers and buy a six bolt flywheel. It cost me $30 for mine. and it cost me $40 from the same wrecks for a h/d clutch second hand with heaps of meat. I did the same thing bought a big clutch with 80% meat thinking it would bolt up to the 3 bolt flywheel but it didn't so i went back and got the bigger flywheel. i didnt get it machined or anything and its great no probs at all.

okay that makes sense now
snap0964 has sent me a link to an old thread in here about this as well and it seems like it might be too much friggin round to re drill.
as i now know, the diameter of the two clutches is different, so i cant even just bolt the 6 bolt clutch in with 3 bolts.
looks like im on the lookout for new gear. either a 6 bolt flywheel or a 3 bolt clutch.
i'll ring some wreckers tomorrow, but they are all useless up here
thanks for your help flash

flash, thanks but i'll have to pass if thats okay.
I would prefer to have a brand new one in there (just cause i want to not have to worry about it for a few years )
i managed to find a brand new one delivered for $170, so i've snapped that up.
i might have a brand new 6 bolt for sale soon though!
once again, cheers for all your help man.

i'm putting on my mining hat today
i have a brand new 3 bolt clutch now (and a 6 bolt ) and i am just finalising all the little bits and pieces to start work tomorrow hopefully.
i am trying to organise bolts for everything (i want new flywheel and clutch bolts). to help me work out which bolt is which i fitted everyting together on the pallet.
the old shagged clutch which came with the kit is a 6 bolt one ( ) and i notice that it lines up perfectly with 6 holes on the 3 bolt flywheel. But these holes arent tapped, they are just blank. there are only 3 holes, and they are of a slightly smaller diameter than the 6 outside ones.
is it normal for a 3 bolt flywheel to have the holes there but not tapped for a 6 bolt clutch? there is also a heap of holes around the outside of the mating face, around 20ish from memory. is this normal too?
I just want to make sure, when it arrives, that my 3 bolt clutch will bolt up to it, and i dont actually have something else again...

Here is a picture of an EA flywheel with the pressure plate mounting points circled if that's any help. As you can see the threaded holes are set slightly more in then the 'balancing' holes.

okay, after that hitch, i thought it would be best to go down and actually re-try and fit the 6 bolt clutch onto my flywheel.
on a more careful inspection, the holes are *just* out of alignment, so it wouldn't go on.
thats okay, i'm much happier now, except i still dont know what all the extra holes in my flywheel are for?

| Balancing, dowels and the depth measure ones that tell you how much more meat is left in it for machining?

oh i also forgot to mention, i measured the depth of the ring gear.
14mm to the bottom of the teeth, 18mm to the outside. not sure if anyone knows the measurements for a late model flywheel?
jarred - cool thanks for that. i feel a lot better now

An easy way to tell an EA box is to look at the casting dates on the lid. It will have like 87, 88, 89, 90, 91 on the casting date. Mine has 88, being a 4/88 build date EA car.

i spose now is a good time to update this thread.
i ended up buying a 3 bolt clutch and using that in there, just used the fly wheel as is. If i had have done anything else, i proly would have looked more seriously into drilling and tapping the flywheel. wreckers up here tend to be short on parts like a flywheel.
with the box, it is a late model one, it has the 3.25:1 first gear. I didnt look for the roofing nail, but i'm sure it will be there.
