Hey guys
I own a el xr6 5 speed.
At the moment i have the standard 16" xr rims on it but i am looking at getting some 18" bf GT/Cobra copy wheels from ebay. Now my question is will these be much heavier then my stock wheels?
As i really do not want them to slow the car down (ran a 14.5 the other week with just exhaust and cai).
I have had a previous experience with another car of mine where the mags i brought slowed the car down massively and even created poor fuel consumption!
I have asked the guy for the total weight of one rim and he said he has nothing to weigh them with....
Any help would be grand!

| 15/16s leave for the track.. 18's are not going to make a huge difference to fuel consuption.. however.. your driving stle whether being a heavy lead foot or p***y footer will have more of a bearing on fuel consumption... |

| They will make your car slower, partly with more weight and partly with the large circumferance acting like a slightly higher diff ratio. |

i got similar wheels off ebay, 18 inch bf GT wheels, i weighed them and they were 25kg each with tyre, that was 5 kg heavier than the fairmont alloy wheels i had on at the time. i heard somewhere that for every 1kg added to the wheels is like adding 9kgs to the car, dunno if its true but the car felt a little slower, but it was well worth it coz they look sweet  |

| I'd buy em and use them on the street, then go for a couple of runs at the strip with them on, then with 16"s on the rear, then with 16"s all round again. You'll soon work out if your slower and by how much. |

The extra width acts towards increasing rolling resistance and wind resistance, and therefore acts towards lower speed and greater fuel consumption. Other factors however can mitigate or create an overall opposite effect to these.
Increased wheel weight means the tyres will have a greater effect of being bounced off the road, or at least periods of reduced ground pressure. Other factors however can mitigate the loss of ground pressure or at least the loss of traction, or indeed cause an overall increase.
If the overall diamater is increased, the odometer will under-read by that proportion, and therefore fuel consumption can be missread.
If the suspension and wheel alignment are set up properly for the tyres, they should be better on the track, but again other factors such as tyre tread and compound can swing this in any direction. |

I have some 18" GTP's and they are great, they do weigh a considerable amount more.
I put stockies back on the car and it's s**t, too much wheel spin and she rolls a lot more. |

But at the same time, i could launch it harder with less wheelspin. |

thats due to a bigger circumfrence of the tyres. |
