Cool thanks for that zxhoon. Yeah was told about the .com.au and requiring an ABN...my mum has an ABN so it may come in handy icon_wink.gif

I figured it may be costly if the .com is already taken, but once the contract expires, isn't it free game and should cost the same?

1. My understanding is that you need a registered business name + abn to get a .com.au domain name, and that the name you choose has to be somehow related to your business name

anyone can get an ABN, you can get it online free from the ATO in about 15 minutes

2. There are people who have bots that register commonly used words, and web search information as domain names (so theres f**k all left) and get them at wholesale price... (~$5-$8 a domain/year) and hold onto it, waiting for someone wanting the domain name enough to pay top dollar for it.

You know those wankers on ebay and so forth, that put their license plates up e.g. "MONARO" and want you to pay $1,500,000 for it ? same thing...but with domains

And if your not much of a webdesigner, perhaps consider taking the easy option and going with a hosting company that provides controlpanel..so you can cheat and run an autoinstall for a CMS, like Joomla, PHPNuke, Postnuke etc

http://phpnuke.org/

Go there thats an example of them using there own software. Pretty much just a template that you can add remove modules in. Pretty good if your not to sure what your doing but still want something decent and easy to manage.

There alot going around these days tho

Mambo is crap...

The people at Mambo decided to go "Commercial" so all their open source developers thought f-you and jumped ship and created their own fork of Mambo called, Joomla.

Joomla is the way to go there, Mambo is poorly maintained by the leftover dregs of programmers left behind when all the decent talent left to work on Joomla

Here's the websites of a few, to have a look at...they all run their CMS's on their websites, so it gives you an idea of the design and application variants of CMS's (content management systems)

http://joomla.org/
http://www.postnuke.com/
http://phpnuke.org/
http://www.komodocms.com/
http://drupal.org/
http://php-fusion.co.uk/news.php
http://runcms.org/modules/news/
http://www.xoops.org/
http://seagullproject.org/
http://www.memht.com/
http://www.maxdev.com/
http://www.contentnow.mf4k.de/
http://www.cmsmadesimple.org/

They essentially provide a framework website, that you add to and change through point and click kind of arrangements, instead of having to manually write code for a site.

A word of warning for anyone, there is very cheap domain registrations out there, a company called "Globat" which goes under many different names like www.domainsarefree.com is one to never register a domain with.

If you register with them using a credit card they have a nasty habit of sending an email stating they will be automatically signing you up for hosting unless you reply stating you don't want it, then they keep doing this over and over each month, trust me they do it, I have a domain reseller account but it isnt that cheap for .com's unlike .au, so if I register a domain for fun, like say gmboatanchors.com I look for somewhere very cheap, well it backfired, I have now had to contact Visa three times, each time Globat credited me back or it was refunded by Visa in my favour.
$39.95US or $49.95US each time.
Do a search for fun on Globat and check out how many p****d off ex customers there are with pulling that s**t

Well it's been a while since I gotten back to this.

Thought I'd ask my questions regarding who to go with for domain hosting and servers and such. I am still nooby to the whole server/hosting stuff so not sure who to avoid or who is reliable.

The www.phongus.com is finally out in the market and hopefully I can grab it as soon as possible.

So if anyone can give me a helping hand of what to do to get started, that'll be great icon_biggrin.gif.

Thanks in advance.
