This isn't the first time I have heard big kms out of an Excel, it has probably done most of those kms on the hwy, early Excel's were just fitted with Mitsubishi engine and gearboxes, "jonathon's" mates engine is actually Hyundai built.
There is actually very few modern 4 cylinders that don't have a timing belt, the average needs it replaced at 100K.
I worked on Festy's when they were new, I personally think they feel like a shopping trolley to drive, but they were reliable, forget about the 1.3L as it was a gutless POS, go the 1.5L, totally different feeling car to drive (but still just a shopping cart), just some of the early 1.5s had gearbox issues.
BTW the early Festys didn't have clear front corner blinkers, but many have faded that bad you can not see any orange, the bulb holders are designed for non clear bulbs, not amber like EF/EL etc |

| just from an interests sake some of the new stuff is now 210000km for timing belts, and toyota has been 150000 for 8 or more years now so it pays to always check the schedule. |

Not even I knew that, Mazda BT etc still have the belts replaced at 100k, can't see Ford adding another 50K to the life by rebadging LOL
Many of the smarter companies went back to chains (I say smarter because I hated changing timing belts and can not see the point to belts any more) eg. Mazda's MZR engines or exactly the same thing Duratec 23. |

I will be honest and say I never checked when the timing belt was due on Focus, just serviced as per service manual and parked up  |

as macca said its all hwy kms from adelaide to pt augusta once a week and to bathurst once a year and even over to melbourne and back |

My aunt had the 1.5 twin cam Excel (99 model)
as long as you service them they last forever
hers had p/s a/c and great on fuel, heaps more power than the single cam one too.
Sold it after she passed away last september for $3,300 with 105,000 on the clock |

i'd go the hyundai unit over the kia (ooops, i meen ford...ford ford ford) meh both korean man. but personally i'd go the hyundai, mate's parents have one, 350000km on the clock, only problem they had was they didnt do the timing belt and it let go, but there all up and running again now so yeh...
all up to you...do you perfer kia or hyundai? |

Kia Avella for the Asian Market, Ford Aspire for the US market, and Kia Pride for the euro market (only sold as sedan).
Regarding the clear corners, the 96+ had clear corners.
The gearboxes are generally what festiva (94 on) are famous for breaking- Though generally under stressed situations.
Another problem is the fading plastic headlamps. An easy enough fix with a bit of sandpaper and plastic polish. |

just incase you dont know.
all cars with belt driven cams will need the cam belt changed between every 80,000 and 100,000kms or 10 years..
most people dont worrie or dont know about it ..
thats why they say its a common problem because they usually buy a car with just over 100,000 kms thinking its got low kms! lol but forget or dont know that the cam belt is part of the cars 80 or 100,000km service.and some people only change oil ect. and forget about the rubber belt driving the cam..and more than likely they fail just after they buy the car. |
Also should be noted that engines running timing belts are free reving engines which mean that in the event of a belt breaking, the valve train will not collide with the piston because they don't go low enough into the chamber.
Truthfully i would steer clear of both excels and festi's would be more inclined to go to a older model corolla or laser or a nissan over them any day.
I have owned an excel (88 model) the only real fault i could put on it is a very noisy transmission (common) and leaky valve guides (also common) causing blue smoke at startup. |

yeah nissan are good, but we cant find any suitable models in the '95 year range. Price range is about 4g
Excels seem to be very common which is good for spare parts availability, and have nice styling about them compared to others in the price range and year.
Trouble is we're looking for an auto and most small cars are manual |

I always knew excels were bad build quality. Had some friends playing soccer in the school carparks a few years back, kicked a ball and it landed bang in the middle of the boonet of an excel and the left-hand headlight shot out... random...
Someone in an Excel ran into the back of my friend at a roundabout and both headlights flew out and smashed. It was a feckin' slow collision aswell.
Thirdly, the EA ended its life by running into back of an Excel, only going about 25km/hr, it completely demolished the back-right of the car. The EA only suffered a bent axle and crumpled panels. |

gawd would not touch that piece of s**t with a barge pole!!! IIRC they don't even have an OHC engine!! like driving around in a 1970's model car mechanically with a body shape that will look futuristic and ugly in 1000 years time. there is one down the street from me that proves how bad their build quality is too - bits hanging off the POS everywhere.... |

all the car reviews ive read praise that car, cant find anywhere that says bad about it? Plus the price they go for seems to reflect that to. But any input is good, cheers |
