i have a dream....

lol but seriously, will air con vents come out of my EL without removing the main part of the dash (as i intend to paint it in the car). Also if i want to change the colour of aircon switches and the various buttons etc how can i get the words/detail back on. I remember seeing someone had made a template a while back but i couldn't find it. Or would i be better seeing a sticker place and getting them to make something up?

Cheers Nick

until last night it never clicked that the aircon buttons and markings lit up. I'm not thinking my best bet would be to cover them with masking take and use a razor blade to cut the shapes.

Is this how others did it who have painted the interior?

mm i might have a go with one from the wreckers first. Is it possible to pull out the panel where the air con switches are without taking the dash out?

i did mine, i printed this little template i made up on photo paper covered it with book covering and took the old grey one off after using it as a stencil to cut the shape, i took the globes out from behind because mine is white interior and u can see it at night and know where the options are anyway.

i attached the thing i made, its in a word document so i could make the sizing properly and print it easy. its a bit dodgy but nobody notices a few pixels.

cheers, if worst comes to worst i will change the colours of the template around and use that. I'm doing the top half of my interior black, so could be a bit of an issue seeing at night with no lights.

I was thinking maybe i spray a coat of nightshade on the panel, then mask off the areas around the markings and paint with the same paint im using for the rest (as its almost impossible to tape off the markings individually, plus there is a slight difference between the finish of nightshade and the other paint im using so i cant do the whole panel in nightshade). Then changing the lighting behind it to brighter LED's so they will shine through and rewiring it so it always comes on with ignition and therefore may be visible during the day aswell.

Now i don't know if this will work, will test first with a part i get from the wreckers, but can anyone tell me if i can get this panel out without pulling out the dash?

cheers

you can get that panel off, just have to remove the dash fascia that goes over the cluster and air con vents, then the front face of the aircon unit clips off.
its very annoying to paint the steering column and get it back on without scratching any of it.
im getting the rest of my interior retrimmed as we speak so it will be all white very soon.
ill take a pic of what my air con unit thing looks like.

i had a look behind the aircon switches today and found heaps of room to place more LED's. Question: if i run them off a 12V power source such as the cigarette lighter, should i run them in series or parallel and with what resistor? I was thinking of using a few 3mm LEDs...

i started on the back doors today, goin with 2 tone colour scheme, black and light grey.

Running them in series would be neater and save space from resistors and stuff. Problem is when one blows they all blow. The colour and output of resistors all affects the resistance required so you'll have to find that out before you can calculate the resistor value. The tech doco about a neon blue dash should help you out a bit.

got the whole dash done yesterday and gave it another coat early this morning. Same with the fascia and the long plastic bit that the stock tweeters sit under.

Now my next question is how do I remove the shifter surround and the dark grey plastic bit around it? ie the only dark grey bits in the second pic.

Cheers

To remove the shifter surround, unscrew the shifter (the handle bit) anti clockwise.

then get a screwdriver, flat head, and leaver up the surround, careful not to damage the plastic, pretty tough anyway.
then keep moving the shifter from park to 1st while lifting the surround out, its so the sliding black thing can get out from underneath

if you need any other help, ive pulled it all out before to do my whole interior so glad to help ya.

^^^Cheers, i've had to put my car back together cause i need it but will have another go later in the week.

Here's it back together, there are still a few parts and buttons left to be painted but i have to organise for stickers before i paint em. I think I'm going to have to change the paint on hard plastics to a Flat Black though icon_sad.gif

well, my car is now written off, so my black interior now sits in it, in my garage lol. I'm currently in the market at the moment for an XH either series 1 or 2 (non-xr), so got a few questions.

1) are the xh interiors the same as any of the boxcar models? (I dont know either interior well enough to know if they are the same).
2) Apart from the xr's, they run log manifold i6, so do they have a boxcar ecu or EL ecu/cluster? This leads on to
3)Will i have to change over ecu's/loom or modify the loom to accept an EL ecu (which I will have to run with EL cluster)?

Cheers

Have a search through all my XH posts - they'll answer these questions, and then some.
Try through the search engine on here, also try google's advanced search, using fordmods.com as the site to search.

Yeah, the forum search engine is okay if you know specifically who posted something, or exactly a word they wrote - google on the other hand is good if you're not sure on specifics.
