Ok, here is the story.

I have recently done an engine conversion in my 94 EF falcon. (this engine has 75K less klms than my original).

After a couple of days it started to have a little bit of blue smoke on start up. This smoke would stop after about 500m or so of driving. So that led me to believe that maybe the valve stems are shot. Note: It doesn't smoke all the time. (This engine is so much more powerful than my last.)

So i went to autobahn and got me some of that Wynn's "stop smoke". This has made the problem 100 times worse. There is more smoke, for a little bit longer, but its not blue???

This has me well and truly stumped.

So what i want to know is:

1 Would my rings & stem seals need replacing

2 Can this be done by myself and my grand dad over a weekend. (any one else done this???)

3 If we cant do it, how much would it cost me to get this done at a mechanic. (any one know of a good mechanic in the sunny coast area?)

Cheers in advance for all your help guys

That sgtbourne,

Is there anyone else that has had something similar happen to them???

I know for a fact it is something oil related. Just need to know if its rings or stem seals.

Cheers

it could be just your stem seals, judging by your stop smoke incident lol, a whole heap couldve run down a f**k seal and rested in the cylinder till you fired it up.

does it smoke after taking off, say get someone to rev the car and back off while you look at the tail pipe?

hi matey a trick taught to me from an old mechanic to see if it your valve stem seals ,is to drive down a moerate hill an pull ya foot off the throttle an have some in your car to watch an see if any smoke comes out the exhaust, if you blue smoke while doing this ya valve stem seals have seen better days

Cheers for all the help fellas,

So i went and got a quote to get the stem seals done. The guy said $200 all up, and can be done same day.

Is that a fair deal???

Judging from the price i take it the head doesn't have to come off?

I guess i can check this for myself, having a head lying around in a room of my house!
