Posted: Tue Dec 07, 2004 7:37 pm Post subject: Problems with lowering and 17" x 7.5" rims? |
|
|
OK, come to the crunch now, im planning on going king superlows or lovell superlows in the fbt, and have spoken to a few people about how low i can go before i start mashing and rubbing on the front gaurds with my 17" x 7.5" rims!
Ive been getting mixed answers so id like ot hear from anyone out there who might have already lowered their cars with 17/18"rims and if they have had any probs with it.
Thanks a heap in advance! |

| People have had bigger rims (bigger than 17") with no problems.. Only problem you MAY have is tyre hitting on guard if you're THAT low. |

I'm currently running Kings SuperLows on the front and Kings Lows on the rear of my 5L ED Fairmont (with LPG tank).
Was running 17x7.5" with 235/45's all round with no problems.
Just changed over to 18x8's with 235/40's all round, again no problems.
Being a different offset with different guard shapes, your mileage may vary.

yep, ultralows are available but said to be very unreccomended for street use due to their lack of suspension travel.

Whiteline superlows, 17x8" with 235x45 all round.
Fronts DO rub the guards under heavy braking/turning. Have to get them rolled, as I've gotten some tyre damage from the guards cutting in.
I think the whiteline superlows is a 60mm drop. Although the back is higher than the front. Pics on my site in sig. |

Well, i use my cars each day..
I have lows in the front and s'lows in the rear of my sportsman, v good handling and sits flat no matter what pretty much.
Only thing is thats on 16" rims and this is 17", so i worry about the front tyres are you say cutting into the gaurds.
The height is only a problem with speedhumps at my local shopping center, thats it - and yes i go there often working there, but i can get around em at least. |

I wouldn't change what I've got - handling is absolutely amazing. Taking tight roundabouts at the speed limit is a great way to overtake here in Canberra. |

When i first lowered my EF I put lovells superlows with my 16" XR6 rims, it went fine for about two weeks, but then on every pot hole i hit when i turned, the tyre would scrape the guard, it was terrible coz it made small cuts in the tyre rubber and also bent my guard slightly in a matter of days..
On the other hand i know someone with the same setup, and his makes it with no scrapage.. i guess its up to the car and how it responds to the springs once their worn in. I had my car raised by one 'loop' and now i run 18's no worries |

Bit off-topic, but do you have some larger pics of your EF? |

Rim size shouldn't matter, rim width will.
You should be compensating for the increase in rim size with a small series tyre, so that the rolling diameter is as close to the same as with stock tyres and wheels.
If the wheels are sitting out in the guards more(filling out the guards) that is when you will have problems. otherwise they should be fine. |

Daniel: do you already have the 17" rims or are you buying them? if so then i guess its just a matter of picking the right springs/shocks.. talk to the people who lower ur car they should know whats best, and if your unsure just post up what they said. if you havent bought the rims yet, then as djmikey said try keep rolling diameter same
Snow_white: yup i'll send u a private msg |
