Theres only a few places it can go - into oil, into combustion chamber or leak out somehere.

So its not leaking....

Any 'milky' reside on the bottom of the oil filler cap?

How's it run? I would have thought if that much coolant were entering the combustion chamber the engine wouldnt be running that well.

Perform a pressure test on the radiator as well, you might be able to pin point where the coolant is going icon_wink.gif Sure you havent got water/ residue coming out the exhaust?

yeah, what 4.9 said, plus if its bad enough u will hear water boiling and popping sounds after u stop the engin after a while of running .. but milky looking s**t under the oil cap is usually the best way to tell i find

yea reading that a bit more carefully, goes from full to empty in the space of 5 minutes? maybe a split hose?? has to be going somewhere, that much water in that amount of time isnt going to be getting into the head even if u had no gasket at all, aint possible

Yeah very true, my guess is that its coming straight out of the exhaust. Which would mean its a head gasket or worse a damaged head.

My car was doin this the other day, Had split a hose underneath the intake manifold (EL).
This is the absolute worst place to split a hose cause you cant see or hear it until your engine has no water!!!

Fill up your resevoir and run it in ya driveway for awhile and take a look if theres any water comin out, if ur losin water it will come out somewhere and the only real way to find it is by leaving it sitting somewhere running and seeing where the water comes out.

Start the car and turn the aircon to full hot temp on max fan, rev it to 2000 for a few mins then get out and look at the water.
Make sure u keep an eye on the temp too.
When u fill it up keep the cap off the resevoir tank for awhile and if the water 'surges' back out like its pushing all the water out the top you need a new thermostat.

Could be head, heater tap, split hose, radiator, or something similar. But if youve got no physical sign of water anywhere on the ground, in the car, or on the engine, then it tends to look like a head or gasket. But at that rate, id be thinking head.

Sounds like its well and truly f**k. Im not sure on total cost (i dont have a 6 cyl) but plenty of the guys here know all about it.

Basically you need the head removed and inspected for damage, prolly decked to make sure the surface is still true. New gasket, put back together etc.

Not much in the way of parts but plenty of labour involved.

It'd be over a grand EASY... I'd expect about $1500 depending on the damage to the engine internals really...

$1000-1500 from a workshop.

Under $500 to DIY, unless the head needs to be replaced.

Id hope not!

Ive reaplced my head twice now (both times done at a shop after splitting it under the camshaft), once under warranty. The first time cost me 1300, which included the reconditioned head and obviously a head gasket. The plkace I went to was fairly reasonable, and helped me figure out things along the way. After getting water in the oil again, they tried to pass it off as condensation due to a hgher compression and blowby, and that theyd seen it on many cars. It was leaking water but, so they had a search around, replaced radiator cap, cracked hose, and heater tap, which all needed replacing, for free. That being said, they didnt listen to my original instructions of putting everything broken back in the boot of the car, so i lost a full set of brand new plugs. Oh well, the second head for free was good enough for me.

i suggest if dont think you can do it or want to do it your self and are going to get a mechanic to do it, at least pull the inlet and outlet manifold off, undo the head and clean it up your self, then tow it to the mechanics yard and get him to do the rest, that'll knock off an hour or 2 off labour costs

how the hell do you put pictures up here,,i've tried the [img][/img] buttons but it don't work
