Hi Guys,
Just wondering with manifolds for turbos does the rule of longer runners and tuned lenght mean high torque??

Yes it does..as you have seen on Nizpro vid clip...http://www.nizpro.com.au/images/achievements/exhaust-side.jpg
But for street a simple "well designed" log style will make enough to smash most transmissions..In most cases the runners can be smaller than n/a to keep lower spool rpm.. |

The general rule is short runners will aid spool up but reduce top end due to limited flow out of the head. Long equal length "tuned" runners will give better airflow up high, but many say they reduce spool but Ive seen some fast spooling big turbos off these manifolds (HKS made jobs though).
One thing to think about is getting a split pulse exhaust housing and make the manifold to suit. Split pulse design is very effective, TRUST use this over ball bearing as they feel it works well in reducing lag, especially on there big turbos built for 4cyls |

I though short, large diameter runners would give a big top end but not so great performance down low. And long, smaller diameter tuned length runners would have good airspeed and bring boost earlier but would suffer slightly in the top end.
The principle behind tuned length runners as I see it is that you don't have any two clyinders pushing the turbo at once. If that happens then you have gaps in the exhaust pulse rythm and the turbo may slow down slightly in between exhaust pulses. I don't know how right or wrong that is but I would imagine thats what happens with a staggered length manifold design where space restrictions and budget prevent tuned length applications. |
