Posted: Mon Apr 17, 2006 7:54 pm Post subject: Uh Oh, lost HL2 CD Key! Help! |
|
|
I seem to have misplaced/eaten the paper CD cover that had my HL2 CDkey on it, the VU support website is of little to no help (their "contact" page helpfully links to the knowledge base) which in turn gives no help,
but helpfully they have provided a nice 1900 number for me to ring, my question is, if i ring this number at $2.48 a minute will they actually tell me what my CDkey was ( ive still got the receipt from my CDkey subscription).
UPDATE!!!
according to this page http://support2.vugames.com/vug/answer.aspx?ID=3561 the CDkey is recorded in my registry (this would be nice but ive reinstalled windows - my old install is still there on another disk BUT i cant boot it anymore - how do i locate it so i can open it to retrieve my CDkey
let me just take one moment to also state that i hate steam quite profusely, i dont like the idea of updating my games everytime i want to play them (thats if i ran steam while a net connection was present) and updating a game the first time i play it is also bad news (yes valve/VU, not all your customers are on broadband) |

| HKCU is the current logged on user - if you are opening up a second registry you won't have one. Look through all the HK User keys.. should be in there! |

Ok, managed to beat the stupid thing, turns out all i had to do was install steam then copy the entire steamapps folder from my old HDD and voila. only problems are:
1: while playing registry editing shenanigans ive managed to screw something up and my computer has been less than stable lately (yes even for windows)
2: i just discovered my HL2 disk has a huge scratch on the LABEL side, luckily i made a backup of it so ill just use that!
god damn i love computers! |
