A V8 Supercar driver critically injured while racing in Adelaide on Saturday has died in hospital.

Ashley Cooper, 27, had been on life support since his high-speed crash into a barrier on the Adelaide street racing circuit during a support race at the Adelaide 500.

Cooper suffered severe brain injuries and failed to regain consciousness.

Adelaide 500 chief executive Andrew Daniels has told media that Mr Cooper's family, including his partner Casey and parents Alan and Maree, was at his bedside when he died.

His two young children, five-year-old Ella and three-year-old Bailey, are being cared for at home at Ulladulla in New South Wales.

Alan Cooper has praised all those who cared for his son since the accident, including track officials, Royal Adelaide Hospital staff and officials of the V8 Supercars competition.

Cooper started racing a decade ago in HQ Holden sedans, then moved to saloon cars.

He scored many round wins and set lap records.

Cooper led the 2005 Commodore Cup championship for most of the year and finished fourth at the final round at Eastern Creek.

In 2006, he was V8 Utes rookie of the year.

Cooper contested three rounds of last year's V8 Supercar series, finishing in the top 15 at Queensland Raceway.

RIP Matey!

thats bloody sad, that crash was a massive impact, shows how hard u hit a wall when the actual impact is on the other side of the car and it still kills u.
RIP. sounds like he was a great racer in the making.

Very sad news and just goes to show that despite all of the safety measures in place, nothing will help you if you hit a concrete wall at that speed. Sad loss to the motorsport family.

thats terrible news, poor bloke, so young. With the condition I heard he was in, I dont think his quality of life would be the same had he survived. It really opens your eyes to how even with the safety standards of the track and car, disaster can still occur.

RIP mate.

Very sad news, especially at such a young age and leaving young kids behind.

RIP mate.

I wonder if their helmets have any restrain on them. hooked up to the seat minimising movement during any abrupt stop. seeing that car slammed into the wall sideways gave me the shivers.

condolences to his love one's & friends!

The rules are very strict now on head restraint and it was made compulsory from the 2005 series for them to wear the new HANS Device which is a head and neck support device. But even still, that was a sickening crash at high speed into a concrete barrier. icon_confused.gif

Less than that. Park Porter was killed at Bathurst, Oct 06. That's not even 18 months ago.

Even though that corner meets all safety requirements, I'll still bet the left hand side of my man hood that it will be reviewed and/or changed. Sad to hear at any rate.

R.I.P.

Unfortunately no matter how hard the guys are strapped into these things, there's nothing you can do to prevent the brain and organs carrying momentum and damaging themselves on the inside of someone's body.

RIP cooper icon_cry.gif

Got to the track just after this happened, saw the replay and cringed... saw the red flag and thought the worst.
