The sub pretty much over powers the rears, so if i can get a decent pair of splits with pleanty of mid-bass then i have done it right. icon_razz.gif

The rears in big cars are only meant to be a filler. Get awesome speakers/splits in the front and normal series in the back. When do you sit the back of your car anyway? Even when you are there, you're either p****d or busy doing something(one) else.

Off-topic for a second, how much did the GreenStuff pads cost?

They're about $100.

The tweeters in the stock positions bring the stage right up and also reflect against the windscreen which sounds sorta harsh to me. Ideally you want the tweeters as close to the woofers as possible.

exactly, having them too far apart means you hear the sound coming from different directions
sounds much better if both high and mid/low appears to be coming from the same sound source.

Oh man but that requires more effort and modifications.... icon_rolleyes.gif I will see what happens, depending on how much its goning to cost for the splits, cause i certainly wont be doing the work. icon_rolleyes.gif

off topic but

Yeah i just got the price on my EBC's and yes they are fricken expensive ($180) and i couldnt get them ne cheaper either.

I was going to do a full brake upgrade but atm im just going to get some decent brake pads for now until i can come up with more $$$ to get the greenstuffs (was a bit more than i thought they would be lol)

Talk to Nick about the deals he can get with Hightek brakes, they can mail the pads to you and it will all cost max about $120.

It is understandable that you can not have speakers in the perfect positions without costing a lot of $$$ however just do the best you can with what you have. Waggin and someone else here has the tweeters to the little door pillar there and that would be ok on a budget.

On the contrary, when fitting splits its recommended that a distance of 50cm from the woofer is ideal. thats the whole point of splits. If you're gonna place them on top of the woofer or right next to it, just get some good 2 ways.

Oh here we go two different opinions, whos right and whos wrong LOL.

I would of thought keeping the distance to where the factory splits are in the EF XR's would be fine.

I mean with the dash mat covering them ne way its not like its producing 100% of its sound onto the windscreen should still sound very nice, if you get what i mean.

what i don't quite understand is how firing onto the windscreen can make it have more treble than having the speaker firing directly at you?

how does the windscreen produce the treble because i'm sure the tweeter isn't any different!

the windscreen reflects the sound directly at you, at around head levelish, whereas the woofer is down lower, so you can hear the treble over the midrange.

im always of the opinion that your tweeters should be around 30cm or so from the woofer
any closer and you might as well go 2 or 3 ways, but further away and i feel it starts to sound funny.

Yeah i sortta get what ya mean, With my HU thou i can change the power output of the high freq ne way. It still sounds good when its changed but the treble is just toned down a bit. Im sure most other HU's can do much the same.

i guess it comes down to what you want to do, how it fits in your budget.
ideally, you would have pods instead of mounting them in your doors, but when your on a bit of a budget, or are looking for more of a stealth install u might as well stick with what you've got.

to look in my car it looks like the speakers are standard icon_smile.gif no exposed tweeters, no fancy pods icon_smile.gif

sounds good enuf for me too, loud & clear!

ive been through a few brands of splits and te INFINITY ones i have at the moment are awesome for the cost of them $300. I removed the standard dash pad mounted tweeters and fitted the new tweeters in the grill part of the dash top, they come with adjustable bases so sound direction can be changed to suit. very happy with them. i have pics of tweeter install if interested.

you could try spending some $$ on sound deadening.

i found it not only improved my mid-bass in the doors, but also the clarity of the sound and the apparant volume (by apparant, i mean, less rattles means u can concentrate on the music more)

u could do ur boot while ur at it and improve ur sub bass too icon_smile.gif

Too bad i didnt sell my car back then as that was 4 weeks ago and now its expired GGRRR.

if you want a good set of splits for cheap take a look at these Jaycar ones:
http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=CS2298&CATID=&keywords=kevlar&SPECIAL=&form=KEYWORD&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=&Keyword2=&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=
I fing that Jaycar has made splits for the price of cheap ones, but believe me, the quality is right up with the best! icon_biggrin.gif

Focals by far, 2 way and 3 way components, failing that dyn audio, both very bright in treble but good control and handling, and complemented by a clean mid bass
