not sure when this first started, and its got me screwed as to whats causing it

When i righclick on or, select then ctrl-c or ctrl-x a video file my screen goes blank for a second almost like its changing screen modes, the length of the blank varies each time, (from quicker than you can see to almost 1/5 a second), sometimes it will be accompanied by the "explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close dialogue" and while DEP was turned on for explorer id quite often get a warning dialogue from it too. Ive tried disabling DEP (boot.ini switch) to no effect.

im running winXP SP2 (with latest updates), and have recently been playing registry funny buggers (but im using my pre problem .reg file now) and ive also ran system restore in the last few days (due to registry funny buggers).

once again, i love computers!

god damn nerds, i dont have the countless hours needed to find all the drivers to install linux, and my family may start to think i was turning gay if i got a mac.

i may end up just re installing windows, ive done about 10 windows installs this month, my family/friends come up to me with some obscure problem (like mine icon_smile.gif ) i nearly always just suggest that i come over and re install windows for them!

sounds to me like you have an ongoing registry issue.

id either format as suggested, try a windows repair install, or try restoring the registry to an original state.

This has the benefit of being like a windows reinstlal by getting rid of all that crap, only it doesnt get rid of any data icon_smile.gif

when you right click or select video file to cut or copy, windows by default attempts to load a preview of the video file, and in the process calls on a file called shmedia.dll

theres a fair few things that could be making your screen blank off then on, but obviously something in this file might be making it happen...

i would suggest disabling the whole preview functionality by going start/run, typing "cmd" to open a command prompt, and typing this in the window:

regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

If this stuffs something up or doesnt work, you can always re-enable it by typing

regsvr32 shmedia.dll

if that doesnt work i've had luck deleting the "default" value in the following registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler

also deleting this key can disable shmedia.dll
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32

remember to make a system restore point or write down what you delete just incase you wanna go back to the way it was...

on the case of your screen blanking, it sounds funny but make sure if you have a fan on your graphics card that its spinning (ive seen this happen on overheating graphics cards where the fans have stopped due to excess dust), or also try downloading and installing the latest drivers

... or just move to linux icon_biggrin.gif

let me know how it goes

thats a good idea.. but if your harddrive is NTFS (which it probably is), then a win98 boot disk wont be able to read the partition...

boot from the the xp sp2 cd you have, and choose R to enter the recovery console.. its just like dos but will read ntfs

also i just thought of something, in windows, go start/run and type "cmd" to get into command prompt window, then type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes then hit enter. it'l load a system file checker which checks the integrity of every system file, and if it finds modified or corrupt files it asks for the xp cd to replace them... its fixed a lot of problems in the past
