If anyone has a c4 clapper starter motor lying around and would like to get rid of it, please let me know.

Went to put on my gear reduction type one today, and the solenoid hits the extractors. Would need to move the extractors by at least an inch for it to work.

Thanks in advance!

i had this problem with my ute, the solenoid hit the extractors.
I got a 6cyl ef starter (xp-au2 are all the same anyway), milled some of the bracket off because it hits the ring gear.
It works perfectly, and mine has a c4 behind it, but i would still much prefer the correct starter for it.
But the 6cyl starter has more torque to turn the motor than the old one.
I hope this helps.

it does work, just 1 thing you should do - check the out of mesh clearance, make sure it's not too far or too close.
It should be good, mine is, it sounds like an ef to crank.

by the way if you do decide to go with theh 6cyl starter, you have to drill the mounting holes to 10 or 11mm (i think).

I eventually had to go with an XC (6cyl) starter. The ED one, the solenoid was to far down that it was hitting the draglink. The XC one is a three bolt, but the solenoid fits halfway. My 67 is LHD.

I tapped the upper hole to take the bolt I had, but being alloy, I've used a nut anyway.

All ford 6cyl starters have the same bolt and mounting pattern, but just need to have a nick taken out of the casing for the flexplate.

ah damn i thought you were talkign about a v8.
we put an ef starter in a mates XC fairmont a couple months back, only problem is the auto dipstick mount, we just bent it around and it somehow fitted nicely, now it starts first go.

No it is a V8. I've got a 67 mustang with an ED XR8 motor with an F150 AOD tranny behind it, but am going to leave it LHD. If it was RHD the ED 6cyl starter would've fit.

But the XD 8cyl starter and the XC 6cyl starters were both 1.3HP and all the parts were still interchangeable, just that the solenoid housing is slightly different.

But I'm glad that you told me that the 6cyl ones fitted. Wasn't really looking forward to putting a clapper in there and messing up my hidden wiring theme.
