G'dap people;

Just two questions regarding my EB2 Falcon.

1. Firstly, what is the going rate for a reconditioned diff centre, and what ratio would this be (march 93 4.0 model)? Alsi, how big of a job would this be for a mechanic?

2. Secondly, when it is suspected that the tailshaft is the cause of a vibration at higher speeds, whatdoes this entail exactly? Ie. Replacing the whole tailshaft; certain bearings; or something else? And would this be a big/expensive job for a mechanic?

Thanks for your help Champions.

In regards to question 2, What do you mean by higher speeds? 140+? Vibration in the driveline can be the cause of several different things. Normally if a universal joint has worn the vibration starts at around 80km/h but lower if the UJ is severly worn. Imbalance comes in over 80 (check that there are no missing balance weights, you will know if they are missing as a tack point will be visable). Also check for play at the slip yoke of the driveshaft where it enteres the transmission. Its common for the transmission extension housing bush to wear and will cause vibrations at speeds from around 80 km/h. If the bush is worn the seal will also have to be replaced.

The vibration is most noticable from 100km/h onwards, but starts to get really bad from 120km/h on... All four wheels have been checked and balanced, so balancing is definitely not the issue.

Have a check of the tailshaft for missing weights. Like in this pic.
