I have an EBII that may need a motor and/or gearbox soon. I am considering an AU motor and it would be convenient to use its auto as well. What if anything would be involved in using/adapting the AU auto?

I would use an EL ECU.
A six speed auto would be nice and with its low first ratio would save me $$ from not having to change my diff. But i think this would be a very big and expensive job?

the au auto and motor will run fine off your ECU. just bolt on your intake and exhaust, get an au motor will all ancillaries , drop your distributor into it, you need to cut the A/C bracket to fit it, and shave the fins off the front of the sump on the au motor and thats it drop it in. its pretty easy.

Okay, so even though one is eeciv and the other is eecv the autos wiring etc is the same, just plug in?

there are a few things that need modifing to fit the au engine in ..
the x member needs to be cut. or the sump can be modified.
the ecu is fine if your using the eb manifold ect.

yeah i wouldnt bother with the modified cross member... to much trouble when you can just shave the fins off the sump and mine cleared the crossmemeber by about 2+cm which is enough. and ive put my car through all kinds of crap lol and its never touched.

i did cut my x member as it can now be fitted with a ba engine without anymore mods..
thats coming in the next 6 months?
but yea cutting the x member can be avoided by grinding down the au sump..

ba motor nice? what ecu do you plan on running it with it would be nice if there were bypasses for the stock ECU to run if that was easy id go down that path for sure so i dont have to f**k around with aftermarket ecus and not taking advantage of the VCT etc.

the ecu is what is holding me back.
i know there are a few guys doing it. im kind of holding back untill know more about there ecu set ups..

I tend to go on rough roads sometimes so my decisions are different from most. I might modify the crossmember by adding some beefy steel then remove the old rhs, then i might fit a skidplate. Although if i fit a strong skidplate the rest may not need to be that strong. I don't want to punch a hole in the alloy sump, and definitely am cautious about grinding it back which would reduce it's strength. Even for those who keep to the burbs a weakened alloy sump with less protection than standard sounds to me a recipe for disaster. Compare the protection offered by the K-frame on the EBII versus the EF onwards models.

Regarding other aspects, i already have all the bits i took off my EL motor, and any AU motor i get would have the full kit, so apart from that i would need to get thermos, an EL ECU, do the wiring, etc. I think i ought to put the AU injectors into the EL manifold and modify the standard harness to suit. Plus increase the fuel pressure i think. The car is on LPG and i haven't thought much about where the mixer would go, where do they normally go with a BBM?

well with my car i had the front airborn on dirt bike/ 4wd tracks doing about 50km... still didnt touch i basically was paddock bashing it.

Sounds like you could do with some of my mods!

The first time i drove my XG on a slightly rough dirt track i underestimated how bloody low it was and dented the sump on an old piece of stump. Water had flown down the two wheel tracks causing erosion, hence bringing everything closer to the ground, plus there were trees on either side of the track, at the same time as the jolly stump. I'd just swapped from a much higher vehicle, watch out for that one.

Just driving diagonally up a kerb with a lowered EB falc might bring the alloy sump close to oblivion?

I was in a workshop the other day, a volvo XC70 (?) was waiting for it's new motor to be put in. The owner had been so silly as to drive his 4wd down a dirt track and somehow a rock went through the unprotected alloy sump. Insurance covered it.
