Im looking around at an AU Series I, and needing to know about brake upgrades.

There seems to be a pile of kits for S2 onward... so whats the deal with the S1?

Whats the difference in the brakes - and can they be changed over to S2 brakes easily?

SO Is the calipers the difference though?

Like I said - kits for AUII -> BF are available easy. (new that is) - but AU I seems to be an orphan.

I know I can search ebay, and fordmods, and have done that, but theres no definite answer.

Hoping someone who actually works on them might be able to help out

Basically, the AU I had the same brakes front and rear as the EL and that is the MAIN reason you can't find much for the AU I in the way of Brake upgrades. If you want to upgrade to the AU II/BA brakes, you will first need to replace the Stub Axles (uprights) and the Swaybar, brackets to bolt the sway bar up and links to hold the sway bar to the lower control arm. The Lower control arm is different on AU II onwards but it is just a small bracket at the front of the arm that is missing from your arm. I have been told that you could weld the bracket on to your arm and that would negate the need for a new lower control arm but you would either have to have a bracket fabricated, get a bracket off 2 old lower arms from AU II onwards or, bite the bullet and get 2 used lower arms.

It does seem to be a lot to go through but, like you said, the ability to obtain better brakes and greater stopping power should be worth the effort and $$$

just go the S2 or 3... the price difference isnt that different and you get the updates heater controls+heaterbox, smartshield... (not e series smartlock) + wider rear bar and unless your going for a fairmont clear rear taillights and high series bonnet and grill

Fair call, however there are significant price differences between S1 and S2, and for what I want to do smartshield may be less relevant.

Im fairly sure I know a good way to make smartlock more effective....

Hmmm much to think about
