Yes you can but it is a lot of work and you would be better off living without a dipstick or buying a gearbox with one.You can check your's by undoing the fill bolt and if oil starts to flow it is ok.If it doesn't then start the car run through the gears and then turn it off and jump under the car ,undo the bolt again, fill it with transmission fluid until it flows out, stick the bolt back in .Usually easier with 2 people and a hoist or give it to a mechanic, good luck.Kevman

I was told the hole size you need to drill is odd, something like 15.5mm, in which case the drill will cost around $40 to $50. Care to remove the trans to do it? And make sure you don't get swarf inside the box?

For $3 you can buy some 1/2" clear hose from a hardware or auto shop, and push it over the end of the plastic pipe that comes with the trans fluid bottle. Then make a hole in the rear of the bottle's handle so air can get in. Then poke the end of the clear hose in the tranmissions fill hole, raise the bottle beside the door and above the altitude of the fill hole, and presto, it will fill, slowly. There are much better ways though.

If the box is cold oil should not flow. Oil should only flow if the oil is at operating temp.

The oil is meant to be at the level of the fill hole when the box is only mildly warm. Drive 4-6kms never going above 2500rpm. I got this recently from my EL owners manual.
