Is this normal for my EL to be doing this? Im driving around town in 3 because I dont want it to go into 4th, but at 60ish it still goes into 4th? And if you're going up a hill it will drop back down and up again, and down again.
Why the hell wont it stay in 3rd when I select it?

If this is normal im half tempted to put a 5speed in it.

My Skyline stayed in whatever gear it was in, and ive never notice this on any other late model car.

The later model boxes (EF onwards, IIRC) can lockup TC in third under cruise conditions I think.
Is that what your mistaking for 4th?
Mine will not shift up from the selected gear, ever.
Just too see if theres anything else funny, does it shift into third if you hold second?

On the up and down thing, get used to the auto not knowing what the f**k gear it wants... you can't stop them from kicking down.
It's a matter of feeling what conditions it will shift under, you get use to it.

well my gearbox, doesnt stay in first, or 3rd when ur in 3rd it will either select drive if under a certain RPM or it will just go back to 2nd, if i want the car in second i gotta put the shifter in first, lol my box is unfixable something to do with the automatic clutch and mine doesnt start in park

I did think it was the T/C but why the hell is it engaging in 3rd.
Anyway to override it?

Think it's the S7 solenoid that activates the TC lockup (someone correct me if im wrong!).
So you could tap into it, using a shiftkit like resistor setup, and have it on a switch.
Someone on here has it done, but I cant remember who! sorry!

This exact same thing happened to me when i bought my Ef, it would not stay in a gear even when i was doing over 100Kmh it would kick down to 1st then jump up and no matter where i moved the selctor it would do it's own thing.

the fix: took it to a tranny place and he took it all apart and told me the gear selector switch ( that tells the car what gear it's in) had fused the the gear selector rod and thus preventing the ecu from knowing the correct gear it's currently in.

Set me back $500 on the dot for replacment oil, rod, switch and labour.

Hope that helps.

In the EL's if you have 3rd selected, TC lockup will occur around 50kmh. In drive, it will be around 78kmh - it will change up to 4th under part throttle around 45-60kmh. The lockup will also disengage when you take your foot off the accelerator.

More than likely its the gear position switch, these from time to time get water, sand and other crap in them.
If its in manual 2nd or 3rd, it WILL NOT change up a gear regardless.

Change the position swich, you will find it will solve the problem, cost should be under $100.
