hey fellow modders.
this morning on the way to work as i took off from a set of light just normal driving not racing or anthin. i heard a big clunk and now theres a bad whine comming from my gearbox. my main question is this: is the 4pd auto out in my xt v8 the same as one from a six. or are the boxes different between six and 8 cylenders?

common buisness stratergys would suggest all 6s have one box and 6ts and 8s have a beefyer box. call ford and ask for part numers of both and see if there is a difference.

cheers mate.
so i rang ford. they put me thru to parts and service and what the dude said nearly put me on the floor. all the BA gearboxes are identicle except for one piece. the extension housing at the back of the box between the six and 8 cyl. coz the sixpot hav a longer block the extension housing is shorter. thats it. also that is a easily changed piece too.

so an XR6T/XR8 box is basically the same as a XT box?

yep. i asked wether ther was any strengthening done to the v8 boxes and he said nope. just the extension housing is different.
couldnt believe it myself. but maybe thats why xr6Ts and the like have lots of trouble with boxs when they get modded.

aha. well second opinion was more like wat i had been expecting.
the sixpots have a shorter and very different spline on te back of the box plus diffferent lengths so unlesss i wanto pull a box apart to change that then i hav to get a v8 gearbox. also the box's in the xr8s and such are a different part number again to te 3v v8 box. so great.. a engine specific gearbox. .. damn. lol. how hard is it to do a manual conversion?.. do you need a manual computer?

the 3V and XR8 boxes are interchangable to my knowledge.
I've just purchased a Boss motor for our 3V Ghia, the previous owner had the Engine in a BA Ghia, he blew up the 3V gearbox with the boss motor, then put an xr8 box on. suggesting they're able to be swapped.

o really> did he mention anythin about changin anythin like torque convertor or bell housin?
if xr8 box is straight in that would help my searchin abit

no mention, but i don't see any reason why any of that stuff would matter.
its the same block so it should bolt up.

true but ford do silly things.
 also wonder is the tailshaft spline on the back of a xr8 box is the same. coz xr8s got the m86 diffs.

That is a good question, one i can't answer yet
But i do know that i got the tail shaft with my conversion so its possible.

ah. lol.
spoke to papa smurf. the only difference between my box and a xr8 i a valve body inside. so should fit no worries.
