Well I'm off the road again! :( early sunday morning was driving to a mates place to go out fishing, came upon a smallish uphill climb in 3rd gear full throttle at around 70kmh then heard a horrible grinding/clunking noise backed off throttle and my first thought was the diff. Got tilt trayed home and was backing it into garage and the horrible noise became worse, I put it in neutral let the clutch out and the noise returned, well that eliminates the diff at fault, so I pulled the box out and tryed to spin it by hand no luck, so I pulled the box apart and found it had broke half the teeth off third gear, so I'm up for rebuild.

Not having a whole lot of luck lately hey.
At least once it is done it will be another thing that can be ticked off as being new and shouldnt give you anymore trouble for a while.

HP, you should know better than to give any T5 a lot of power in 3rd gear. That is there known weak point.

Oh well, do you have a spare to just throw in for now?

Will you stay with the EA type box or go for the later one now you have the options?

Cheers

Not really.

It has shorter 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th gears, and no synchro on reverse.

T5s are know to have a weakness in 3rd gear when shoving lots of torque/power through it as the shafts separate under high load.

Some prefer the EA T5 because of the gear set. I have one in my wagon, and with the 3.27 diff gears, it makes the overall gearing roughly equivalent to an EF/EL xr manual with 3.45 diff gears.

Cheers

They normally break when letting the clutch out rather than the power being fed on while in gear. Least theyre relatively cheap.

A rebuilt T5 is around the $600 + mark, and that is exchange.

I think krisisdog is referring to the fact that T5 boxes can be had 2nd hand from $50, and are therefore cheap.

I'd love to pick one or two up that cheap, rebuild them myself & keep as spares, but i always see them going for about $200 - 500 for second hand boxes on their own.

I wonder if there is a way to overcome this shortcoming of 3rd without huge expense?

Cheers

Nope. There is no way to overcome weakness in the T5 for cheap as it is case flex that does the damage.

If the case was recast stronger, what's the rest of the box like? Would it hold up to say 500Hp? I'm a bit curious as i've got 2 Xr8's with T5's in them.

Cheers

You can get a stronger T5, but they are not cheap, it is actually cheaper to step to a TKO

Yeah most of the dog box kits from the US include a beefier housing....as said if you intend to give it heaps t56 or tko are still your best options.
