can the shims be made up from shim metal? or are they a bit bigger than that and are required to be engineered?

The dial indicator tells you how much backlash or slack there is between the gears. You clamp the pinion gear so it wont move, push the ring gear as far as it will go in one direction, set the dial indicator on the edge of the tooth, and then push the ring gear the other way. The dial indicator will show how much movement there is. If there is too much or not enough backlash once again you have to play with the shims.

As for the shims - start by using the ones that were used with the center in the diff it came from. Chances are they will be close enough, or at least you can work out where to go from there.

Whats the tag say?
I think with EA-ED "high performance" indicated a diff with 28spline axles?
Don't hold me to that, and if your tag doesn't say it, it could still be 28spline.

all lsd diffs should have that tag on it, 25 or 28 spline no difference with tag.

'High performance' doesn't denote an LS centre.
Thats 'slip resistant'
I can't remember if High performance was for the 4pin centres or for the 28spline axles...

I believe it indicates the 4 pinion.

the tag says, high performance lsd, then it goes on to say somethign about the lubricant....

apart from limited slip differentials what other 'performance' diffs where available in the ea-ed range?

thisis starting to become confusing haha.
