I'm fairly sure I have a spring missing from a particular piece inside the bellhousing in my car.
It's an EF manual conversion, and when we were doing the conversion (I'd never changed a gearbox before so I was a newb..) my mate mentioned there was a spring missing from the clutch fork.

The bit I'm talking about is, inside the bellhouse where the throwout fork connects to the bit protruding from the inside of the bellhousing. So at the moment the fork is on there, but due to the lack of this particular spring, the clutch has a bit of play.

I don't know how better to describe it short of drawing a picture or taking the back end apart again and photographing it...

My question is, once I have obtained this particular spring, should it go above the fork, pushing it onto the gearbox, or below the fork, pushing it towards the front of the car..?

EDIT: Is this making any sense at all?

there is no spring on the clutch fork...
but there should be a spring from the clutch pedal to the floor, which takes up the slack in the cable and pulls the clutch fork againt the pressure plate..

As troyman said there is no spring on the clutch fork as the the pressure plate gives all the needed force to hold the fork back to normal position and the thrust bearing spins with the drive shaft to prevent any damage. As long as there is a small amount of free play at the clutch pedal all should be good.

Ok thats positive.

So the clutch fork is meant to have a bit of play.. Just checking, with nothing else in the bell mouth, the inside end of the fork was able to mive up and down by close to an inch.. so thats normal.

Ok so where is this spring meant to go?? I'm heading out to Fordpro probably tomorrow and it's a long trip so I want to make sure I don't have to make it again. So it's a spring that goes on the floor, presumably on the outside of the firewall where the cable comes out...? Should be fairly obvious where it attaches and such?

yes without the cable pulling on it the clutch fork will move a bit..

no! the spring goes inside the car.. it goes from the clutch pedal to a little tab on the floor..
it will be in line with the pedal below where the cable comes through the firewall...
