I own a 1998 EL Fairmont Ghia sedan.
I have an automatic transmission. Whenever I have my foot on the brake and shift gear [N to D, etc] I hear a creaking sound. I have no idea what this could be. Has anyone encountered this elusive sound before? |

most autos ive ever been in kinda sound like this, including my own..
throught it was just the brakes coz as soon as u put the car into gear, its gonna try moving forwards or backwards, and assumed it was the sound of the discs trying moving slightly thru the pads anyone else??

Agreed. It's just the car forcing itself up against the brakes. Nothing to be worried about.
It's a fair bit louder when you're stalling it up...

Make sure the bolts on the diff flange are tight (where drive shaft bolts to diff)

agreed. most likely the brakes creaking from being loaded up.
If its just started, then i would suggest getting it up on a hoist and checking all engine and gearbox mounts for damage/loose bolts etc.

Try with just the hand brake on if it goes its just the main brakes....

yep - had that problem too, maybe it was the gear selector.
