Hi All,

My friends EF transmission is on its way out and he has been getting qotes on transmission rebuilds up to $1500.00 for a full rebuild on his transmission and that includes taking it out and back in and also installing a external oil cooler so it by passes his radiator.

He is happy to pay the money we both hear so much dodgy S%$T with Sydney transmission builders were they just change solinoids or whatever else and dont do a full rebuild and give u only 12 months warranty.

How true is this as ive heared abit of that as well and dont want him to get screwed.

If i were to pay $1500.00 for a full tranny rebuild and only get 12 months warranty id tell them to jam it as i drive my car normal and dont thrash it so i would expect 24months warranty for that much being spent on a gearbox.

Like my C4 costed 3k for a full race spec fully rollerised gearbox to handle 900hp which was warranted by my gearbox builder so i would expect a decent warranty cover on a daily driver.

If your mate is getting quotes of $1500 to R&R + o/haul & supply & fit a cooler - I'd be seriously wondering if all the parts required to rebuild it are being replaced!

The parts required to fully rebuild a BTR - with a rebuilt exchange convertor cost $650 + the price of a cooler - $200?

What he'd be getting for $1500 is a re-seal, re-use whatever parts possible,New filter, give the convertor a "Kero out" & back in she goes!

Most reputable places charge $2400 - $2600 for a BTR rebuild & it comes with a 3 year/60K warranty. It takes 8 - 10hrs to do a BTR properly @ $80-$95/hr.

With automatic transmission - you definately get what you pay for!

Yeh all these dodgy places only giving him 12 months warranty which i believe is nothing as if there done right then they would last for yrs just like the factory transmission.

I didnt know it would cost $2400-2600 for a tranny rebuild for a BTR

You must be in the industry???

Yes - I was a transmission specialist for 24 years.

The last place i worked at used to charge that price (as most ATRA members) - you definately got what you paid for! They are finding it hard for customers to justify spending that sort of money on a EF - EL when the car is only worth ??.

They used to offer a "B" grade rebuild to save losing the job to a secondhand box (reseal, filter, replace frictions & parts where required) - Basically what you would get with a second hand box.

I used APS in Richmond(nsw) when I had my BTR rebuilt which cost me $2280 (i think), which included heavy duty bands/clutches shift kit all new solenoids large pwr trans cooler all the rest of the parts included in a rebuild, was a really good box. I only got 12 months warranty but they are friendly to deal with.

I went past a reputable shop and they quoted me $1650.00 for a full reco if the pump was still in good working order or $2000.00 if pump was not good enough and thats 12 months 20,000km warranty.

I told the rebuilder that i would my mate would pay 2k but want at least 2yrs warranty and he said that all gearbox parts they get from distributors or whoever only get 30day warranty. I was like WTF is that really the case???

Maybe better just get a low km wreaker box for $500.00 and know what your getting

Go the AU gearboxes the same???

Well the flaw in that plan though is that with a wrecker box, you don't know what your getting, and i wouldnt pay $500 for a used btr either.

Au boxes can be used with a bell housing swap, and visa versa, my mate has a ED box in his AU.

Fully rebuilt BTR, including another casing (mine was worn somewhere) and convertor reco $1900 with 12 months warranty for my EF last year here in Adelaide. Only 12 months warranty, but you'd struggle to find anyone who would offer more than that period on an auto.

Mike

Just shows me they dont stand behind there boxes if they dont give at least 2yrs warranty.

Just like engine reconditioners, some give 5 yrs warranty only if its serviced with them or 2 yrs if a registered mechanical business does it which is fair enough. I would expect a warranty like that for a full reco box.

Give this guy a ring - Neil 0401713652. He is the rep for Motospecs transmission parts (Sydney based) Ask him for a price on a BTR 93 "pizza box" rebuild kit.

The "pizza box" kit has the minimum parts needed to rebuild it - Gasket, seal & ring kit, frictions, front band, filter, etc, etc.

You are going to have to strip it first & see what is wrong with it - It might need a....

Torrington kit
Bush kit
C3 & C4 clutch wave springs
S5 Solenoid - That kit comes with an S5. The ones on Ebay don't
Set of clutch steels
Case sleeve
shift solenoids - there is 6 of them @ $50 each
Torque convertor

Or if it needs any "Hard parts" - Geartrain, Clutch drums, pump etc

What is the problem with it?

Can you give me a full run down of what parts are in the gearbox so i can get a quote for a full rebuild regardless of condition of parts.

Just want to get an idea of how much are parts for a complete proper reco/rebuild of a BTR

Im just qurious on how much are all the parts for a full reco as ive been quoted $1650.00 for reco if pump is in good working order or $2000.00 including pump.

Would just like to see how much parts are alone
