Am looking at an EA II series car with the 4 speed BTR auto but the box may be shot. Just wondering what autos are direct bolt ons for a swap? Do the autos from the EB, ED, EF and EL bolt straight in and are there any wiring differences? :?

you can directly fit 4 speed auto's from ea2 -au.. only differences are torque converters and late ef onwardss dont have a dip stick..
if you use a box from el -au best to use the el-au torque converter as there are some differences in the oil pump in the box,
otherwise there the same...

Further to Troyman's post.
The EA-D torque converters actually have a different throat size to the EF-AU ones and as such will not physically fit onto an EF-AU trans and vice-verse.
I found this out the hard way! :)

i own an nc lane with a au box in it. i suggest that as an option. the au box is smoother and stalls higher. although i heard earlier boxs are stronger.

Isn't the shifter in a different position on AU's? Further back in cabin?!

Yeah, I knew box was same length. But the shifter bits are a few inches further back on AU. So that would require some level of pissing about?

Ah well, whatever. I might find out. Could try an AU box into the ED this weekend. But then again, EF would be better. Dipstick and all that. Plus any AU that is being wrecked in NZ has probably been a taxi......

No changes on the auto shifter bits. Only the interior shifter bits for the AU.

The box with the difference is the manual.

I've just put an AU box in my wife's EL. All we did was swap the bell housing.
