Location: coffs harbour
NSW, Australia

I bought a 97 falcon futura and now im having a few problems with the gearbox.
the problem was that when it was changing gears it would almost hop (at low speed it was very noticable) then change gear and be smooth again. So i had it serviced at my local shop and the found a few things wrong with it (had a small leak so they replaced the pan gasket ect..)
Now for a few days afterwards the gearbox was fine
but now whats happening is that it is very slow to go into first gear (its almost like its loading something then it takes off) there is no jumping of the gearbox or anything noticable apart from it being very slow ,this only happens when i first start the car early in the morning and after it warms up its fine.
im thinking to just have the box overhauled might be the easiest thing?
anyone have any other suggestions?
Apart from that and a few other small issues (as expected with any 11yo car), its a nice car to own.

I was quoted $2000 for an overhaul, plus r/r, which is most likely not worth it for an EL. Maybe the box is okay just needs a bit more tlc. Otherwise you could keep the car for parts and get another of the same model and colour, except get a fairmont.

i got a quote from a local bloke at $950 exchange (this one has done less km's than mine)

seemed fair i thought?

searched around ebay and found a few parts i think ill get

whats actually wrong with it is the torque converter (well thats what i thought the mechanic said) is worn, other wear is also evident ( dont ask its just what is on the paperwork he gave me)
it cost me $400 to sevice the transmission and replace a gasket

what i do know is that the previous owners (who got it when it was @1yr old from their daughter) have done precisley NOTHING to it at all (bare minimun maintainence done )

i like this car and would like it to last a bit longer than the gearbox will

and sorry i dont like the look of fairmonts

Mate - I may be an idiot, but I sold a completely fine auto transmission for $120NZ and you can regularly buy them over here in NZ for less than $300. Just buy another one and stick it in.

If it is purely the torque convertor, then I have two you could have for $30 each if you want to pay the hundreds for shipping to Aussie - they're bloody heavy...!

just swap the trans for another one, i swapped my old ea box for an el one two years ago and haven't had a problem.

the trans cost me $400 form a wrecker in murwillumbah and it cost $250 to have them swapped at a local trans shop, never had a problem with it.
