My XR6 Tranny (4 spd auto) has this unusual problem. seems that when u slow right down and go to take off again (without coming to a dead stop), the trans will kick down to 2nd from 3rd like normal but with an almighty bang. It almost seems like it jups out of gear and then back in again.Anyone heard of this or know what could be causing it? all drives fine otherwise

That sounds to me like the S5 solenoid problem, its a harsh change from 1st to 2nd.

My EL doesnt stick in any gears it is only if u give it a good boot like off the lights and then lift the foot right off. Seems to just hang there while it decides where to go then just drops into 3rd like a bag of wet s**t. Goes fine on the highway. No noises or vibrations or anything like that and i ought to know cos i do around 1000 k's of highway driving every week lately. Something makes me think it could need an oil change though as the car has done 190 kand id be doubtful that the oil has ever been changed in it. Blocked filter or something maybe???

try getting the auto serviced and change the s5 as others have suggested it should fix the problem for you

My EL Ghia does the same thing.

When you boot it from a standing still, or low RPM and let off suddenly at higher RPM (like 3500 or 4000) it will drop from 1st to 3rd after hanging in 1st for a second or 2.

It only does it in power mode though, not econ. Otherwise it shifts and goes perfectly.

And its done this since I bought the car 4 years ago, when it has 30,000km on the clock. I assumed this had to do something with the Tickford programming of the auto shifts in power mode, as otherwise everything works perfectly. And its not the only EL XR6 auto I have driven that does this.

So maybe its just normal. Feels really bad, like the trannys gonna fall out or something, but 4 years on and mine is still going strong.

My parents EL Falcon made a big bang noise when changing from 1st-2nd, and sometimes 2nd-3rd, we changed the s5 solenoid, fixed the problem, now after 2 weeks, when slowing down, shifting down gears 3rd-2nd it make clank noise, softer one then before,

what would be the problem here?
