Hi folks,

I am considering changing the diff gears in my EL XR8

It is a series one so should have 3.27s but was fitted with a 3.45 LSD when i bought it

The diff is in geat condition, no noises, whurring noise, knocks... no problems at all and i service it with high quality oil regually.

The has a full exhaust (extractors and twin system) with a K&N panel and intake scoop

My questions are....

- can i just replace the diff gears without doing the bearings and LSD centre if it is in that good a condition?
- is that worthwhile?
- what would that cost?
- would i have to change the speedo so the thing dosnt try and run past the redline (being an auto)

now on the topic of the diff gears which should i get? The car has reasonable performance but i want more poke off the line, dosnt need to be a quarter mile queen just a fun car to drive on the street.

Given that im not happy with the 3.45s i reckon that 3.7s would not be enough so should i go with 3.9s or 4.11s? what are peoples thought and experiences with these diff gears in these cars. remember the mods that i listed with an auto. I will probably go as far as a new MAF, TB, Intake manifold and thats about it

look forwards to everyones replies

Cheers
Jason

I thought from EF onwards, XR8's were fitted with 3.45 gears?????

If you change the diff ratio you will need to fit a speedo corrector so the trans still shifts correctly at the right points.
Might pay to remove the cover plate to see what gears you have before you decide on another ratio

3.45:1 is the lowest ratio ford produced EF/EL's with.

the car has 3.45s in it at the moment...

i am wanting to go to a shorter ration 3.9s or 4.11 for a bit of extra go...

was curious on peoples experiences on these gears with these relatively standard motor, changes in performance, economy and rpm at 100 kph and what i could expect to pay to get the work dont given the great condition ofmy diff

cheers
