me again!

so i was driving along one day went to down gear but nothing happened! the gearbox wouldn't kick down gears when i wanted to e.g 3rd to second (50khs) so i put it in drive again and it went down gears by itself and up gears when accelerating like normal. so the question is are 1, 2, 3, 4 all controlled by a voltage going back into the ecu to use the correct solenoids to change gear?

The BTR 4-speed auto is computer controlled - by the ECU in the 6s, and by a separate transmission computer in the V8s, I believe.

The first thing I would check is the inhibitor switch. It's a white switch unit mounted to the passenger side of the transmission that signals to the ECU what gear it's in. It's simple to replace. Even just cleaning the insides of it with contact cleaner spray might work. It's in a ridiculous spot for a plastic electronic component - constantly exposed to heat, rain, stones, road grime. It's a miracle it lasts as long as it does.

Cheers mate, I'll give it a look on the weekend. It sounds like one of those Fridays at ford! "Where should we put the inhibitor switch... f**k if I know I'm going home"
