t56 or zf 6 speed auto....although it would be a lot more painful getting the wiring right for the zf...

what's the point? is this to go in an xr6t or your EA?

If its to go in the EA then use a BTR and get it rebuilt with stronger kevlar bands, use a big cooler and adjust the shifting solenoids.

Either that or you will have to go a tko or t56 (not cheap), or a c series transmission, aode etc

it will also depend on how much power you are chasing? and what you intend to use the car for (eg. daily driver, weekender, trackdays or drags etc)

zf six speed is the best box attached to the bf xr6 turbo.. but in wanting to do a retro tech answering that question is far more harder..

T56 are surprusingly cheap, $1500 from some wreckers, cand do a DIY T56 install for under $3k

For a 5.0L that would be awesome. I have yet to see a T56 for less than 5k.

$1500 for a T56, let's just say you'll get what you pay for, but there is the odd occasion you'll get a decent box.

It all depends what the car will be used for. If you're going to thrash it, go drags and s**t like that go for a built 4 sp. If you just want a nice car to drive, have a bit of fun go for the ZF. Or if you want a manual go for the T56

yeah sorry, i was looking more at reco boxes or one with uber low km's (if i was doing a build I wouldn't use a 2nd hand one with high kays....particularly seeing as I would be planning on smashing a turbo 6 if I had one)

i wouldn't build a 4 speed for drags, i'd go a c9 with stall.
the ZF box will take 350rwkw without to many dramas, unlike the 4 speeds.
for just a street cruiser though i'd go the T56, nothing beats driving a manual :D

A well built auto will be stronger than a ZF or T56 and will hold up to big power and repeated runs. Definitely a T56 for street cruiser, they're heaps of fun

a c9 yes, a BTR no. It depends on how much power though, BTR's (strengthened) are ok for up to 350rwkw, but wont last forever. A ZF will handle that power with just the addition of a transcooler. i've seen ZF's take high 300's unmodified, most of the people that have broken them have twisted the input shaft..
T56's are pretty tough to, and i agree, they are heaps of fun :)

Guess it just depends who ya get to build the 4sp :P Have a look at Chris' blown Boss ute from BluePower, 10 sec flat car with a 4sp behind it and well over 350rwkw :)

never said it wasnt possible, just it wont last forever. :)
the builder does have alot to do with it as well, do you know who build's Chris's autos for him? i have seen people pay up to $3-4K for a BTR and break it with 300rwkw in less than 6 months without drag strip use...
and yes i have seen Chris's ute, its very nice. i had the privellege of watching it at Ford nats last year.
also had a chat to him, he's a good bloke, straight up, no s**t.

His dad built it, he owns Northern Diffs and Trans Diff. I think if they know what they're doing you'll get a good box that will last, not spend 3-4k and it breaks with only 300rwkw, that's just s**t. There's a few blown Boss' around with BTR's so it shows that they can handle some power.

He took me for a drive in his ute, my god that thing is a f**k animal! I never got to watch him race, he blew his valves the night before i went up :( Was spewing cos he was gonna take me for a run.

oh bugger hey. yeah i agree the box's should last. these ones that kept breaking must have been built s**t i reckon.
which ute are you talking about? does he still have the black and the blue one? the one i saw race was the black one which i think is on NOS?
i've been for a ride in a 10 sec BA turbo, and man that was fast! doing a 10sec pass would be a rush i reckon.
