Sounds like all they've done is turned up the base idle screw as a "fix"... Basically did nothing for the $$$.

If they are sure its the idle motor, goto a wreckers and take one off a motor. Go home, remove the 2 bolts that hold the ISC down, swap the ISC and bolt it back down.

See if it solves the problem.

But since they may have bumped the base idle up, its going to be screwed until is adjusted back down.

yeah... I haven't seen an ISC fail yet...

it bolts straight on top of your butterfly, being an EL? you should be able to see it easily, it will be near the highest part of the motor... As arm79 said... there is two bolts holding it down and a plug with 2 or 3 wires running to it... Takes 15 mins to swap on an EF/EL...

to reset base idle you disconnect the plug to the ISC (it needs to be bolted on), preferably using a multimeter with a tacho coz its more accurate than the revs gauge, adjust the base idle screw (on a bottom corner I think) back to around, is it 680rpm? :S Can't quite remember now... Its slightly higher on a manual to help avoid stalling too... But I can't find it in my manuals now... :S maybe someone else knows off the top of their head...

Cheers,
Tim

Ok well ive taken it all in ive had a look on ebay for the ISC ( http://cgi.ebay.com.au/FORD-EF-EL-XH-6c ... 1855wt_907 )
So exactly where is this base idle screw and is it easy to adjust it because i cant have the car reeving out like card once i turn it on.

thats it... I'd check the local wreckers first though...

it will be on the underside of the throttle body... Basically it screws in and holds the butterfly open a little bit... Not sure how hard they are to get on and EF/EL falcon... I bet if you take off the plastic piping to the airbox then you'll see it under it somewhere... Not sure if it adjusts by hand or with a screw driver now... :S

so you unplug that isc when you get the new one bolt on... start the car... and adjust the screw til you get it set to base idle (I think its on a sticker stuck under the bonnet somewhere)... turn it off... reconnect the ISC and your away...

Cheers,
Tim

Yep. If you take off the intake piping at the throttle body you will see the screw at the 9 o'clock position on the throttle body. Its like a little grub screw.

Unfortunately you just cant adjust it whenever and however. The proper way is setting the ECU into test mode and setting it then. Plus you need a accurate tacho and set of feeler gauges.

I'd firstly be cleaning the ISC and lubing it up. They are known to get sticky over time and can cause a funny idle. I'm pretty sure there is something in the tech docs on how to do this.

I'd also be going to a wrecker and pocketing an ISC before spending $120 on one from ebay just in case it doesn't fix the fault.

One other thing that just comes to mind is make sure the bolts on the intake manifold are tight. A vacuum leak may cause a s**t idle. As may a crack in the MAP sensor hose.

Arm...

Test mode sets the motor to fixed timing and is only used for setting the timing, not the base idle IIRC...

And I do recommend a multimeter with a spark plug lead clamp for accuracy...

I have never seen anyone use feller gauges to set it though... :?

Cheers,
Tim

Then you've obviously never read the EF/EL factory service manual.

Image

I believe the feeler guage is used to ensure the throttle doesn't close fully and bind the butterfly in the bore. So its always a tad open.

Like anything Ford related, there is the way Ford says to do it (which is right almost 100% of the time) and the way everyone else does it.

Will take apologies in the form of a PM or money transfer.

Thats from the EF/EL factory manual. Don't know if earlier models are the same.

For some strange reason that page is missing from my boxcar manual. Should be on page 10-1-26 if you have the factory manual.
