You might need to reset the ECU if you havent already.

Quote:
'Any time the battery is disconnected, the transmission must re-learn the closed and wide-open throttle positions to enable the PCM to determine the proper gear to select for the appropriate throttle position. If the calibration is not performed following power source interruption, the transmission will shift hard and perform poorly.

Also thanks to GTbob for providing the below snippet straight from the FORD EF/EL workshop manual. This seems to be a general relearn procedure but not for the TPS limits, so i guess auto shift points may still be rough for a while. As a clarifying note, i guess that for 5. & 6., you place the car in D with the handbrake firmly applied and do not touch the accelerator peddle.

The correct way to set idle speed after battery disconnection is:
1. Run engine until operating temp reached and thermostat opened.
2. The engine should then be idled for approx 1 minute in each of the following conditions (total idling time approx 4 minutes)
3. Neutral with all electrical loads OFF.
4. Neutral with Air conditioning ON.
5 Drive with all electrical loads off.
6. Drive with Air conditioning ON.
NOTE DO NOT TOUCH THE ACCELLERATOR DURING ANY PERIOD OF THE ADAPTIVE PROCESS.
7. Next, set the wide-open throttle reference position by turning the
engine off- but leave the ignition switch ON, then press the accelerator
pedal to the floor and hold it for 1 minute minimum.
- Place the gear selector in Park and switch off the ignition.
- Drive the vehicle and check for proper shifting patterns.

Try reset ECU as stated. Make sure everything is connected properly at the battery, maybe a plug you disconnected and didn't properly put back in ALL the way. The way it behaves though, it sounds not unlike a bad idle speed controller. Strange that it would happen now if you didn't touch it?

He unplugged the battery, the ECU has been reset.

What are the odds you both have aftermarket cams that you dont know about? Behaviour sounds like what an XR ECU does with an aftermarket cam until it learns over a few days to a week.

Yes and no, the E series computers also control the auto, as it say's in the procedure above the auto must re learn a few parameters so gear changes will be normal, this also applies to the car at idle it may stall or drop revs realy low when drive is selected or the aircon is turned on.

I always find that quote funny.

Having owned a factory manual for 7 years and read it cover to cover a couple of times, there was never a mention of resetting anything to do with the auto.

There are the 4 points to help it learn the idle quicker, but nothing more.

EA/EB days yes, but not EF/EL.

Also never had issues with stalling at lights after d/c battery if everything is fine. ISC good, no intake leaks, a properly set idle screw and stock cam.

I know that I do not have an aftermarket CAM, cos I just got my another EL XR6 cam when I got my head gasket fixed.

It would be $100 to diagnose... Any extra required parts will be added to that $100...

For that money your halfway to buying your own code tester to get read outs and see what error the computer is coming out with and have a go at fixing yourself...

Yep. Ford would be the last place i'd take any of my cars to get a fault diagnosed.

Your pocket will be bled dry by apprentice mechanics that were still in kindergarten when EL's were around.
