My 97 EL Wagon isn't starting properly sometimes. It will crank but won't turn over there is a batt symbol when im trying to start but it's brand new battery and i had it tested and the reading is fine.

Also when driving it won't shift out of 1st sometimes or get's stuck in 2nd. It will then keep up high revs and won't change. If i stomp it a bit it'll then sometimes change.

Also when idling in P or N it will rev up and down between 800-950.

This all started after i degreased the enigne bay the other day with high pressure water. I covered up the distributor with a plastic bag so no water got to it at all. I was careful where i was spraying the water as well.

Can anyone explain what is going on?

Cheers,

Simon

Had the same problem with my old XD after degreasing the enging bay.
Found out everything was worn out.
Replaced the lot and all okay.

Hello Simon, I am not a mechanic and don't pretend to be but from past experience there is a solenoid that controls the auto changing. Before you do anything drastic see a mechanic, it may only be the solenoid. Also the battery symbol, is that the light that goes out when the engine starts? If so it is fine for it to show while you are cranking the engine, and doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the battery. If it doesn't go out after the engine starts it is more likely to be the alternator. The hard to start bit could be any number of things.

Regards,
Noel

Had it checked out on the transmisson scanner, result was TBS located on the throttle body. It's the little black switch on the T/B when u look at it.

Going to fit one my self and see how it goes...Should resolve the problem.

Before you buy the new TPS (throttle position sensor) check the voltage at the TPS, refer to the TPS and Base idle sticky in the V8 forum. My car wasn't starting properly, winding over a few times before firing up. Turns out when you adjust the base idle up to help with a bigger cam you need to adjust the TPS to get the correct voltage. I had to file out the locating holes to adjust the TPS, the V8's already have elongated holes.
